Year 7 to 9

Year 7

Year 7 students have had a focused and strong start to Term 3. There has been signs of outstanding student engagement and application across all subject areas since our return from school holidays. Students are encouraged to continue this good work throughout the term and are reminded that it is important that they take their student diary with them to all classes to record and plan homework or learning tasks they need to complete.

In addition to the great academic start to Term 3, Year 7 have also participated in an incursion on Cyber Safety. This event was hosted by Youth Resources Officers of Victoria Police. Topics included protecting your identity online, respectful online behaviour, and online communications and the law. The Victorian Police Officers raised these important issues in an insightful and engaging manner. The Year 7s asked some excellent questions during the Q and A with Victoria Police about cyber safety and cyberbullying.

Also important to mention was the amazing participation and house spirit shown by the Year 7 students during EDSC’s recent athletics carnival. A high number of students participated in the events and many have qualified for the upcoming Whitehorse Division Athletics Carnival! Congratulations and all the best for the competition on Tuesday 9 August 2022.

Year 8

Excitement is building in the Year 8 cohort as we count down to the highly anticipated Year 8 Camp at Camp Rumbug. Finally, after two years of lockdowns, we are able to leave the city limits and connect with the environment and each other.

As part of the lead in to the camp the Year 8 Class Captains are feverishly working on our next Year 8 event, The Tri-Wizard Tournament. This will be held in the week before camp and will involve activities such as Dodgeball, Trivia and an Escape Room. The Tri-Wizard Tournament comes hot on the heels of the successfully held Year 8 Sports Day, which took place in the final weeks of Term 2. Classes competed against each other in various sports such as basketball, cricket and soccer. Congratulations to 8C and 8K the victors on the day.

With all these exciting opportunities there is something for everyone. We look forward to seeing all students getting involved.

Year 9

Term 3 has had a positive start for the Year 9s, kicking off with a Values Assembly recognising students who have shown behaviours that align with the school values. Classroom teachers have informed the coordinators of students who are excelling in all aspect of their schooling life, from outstanding attitude and effort, to being inclusive of new students and even taking care of injured birds. The positivity continued with the Year 9s as they embarked on their course counselling journey during the first weeks of term. There was a great turn out of parents and students interested in the courses EDSC are offering in Year 10 at the Course information evening. A large number of our students also expressed interest in excelling in their studies by applying for an acceleration subject.  We are also excited to be offering several places in the Student Leadership School during Term 4 and have had many applications from aspiring leaders in our year level after an inspiring visit from two of our year 10 students in Week 3. The good times will continue with Class and Middle School Captains meeting to help organise future events for the Year 9s of 2022. Great things to come.

Child safety and wellbeing at East Doncaster Secondary College: information for families and the school community

The Victorian Government has announced new Child Safe Standards to further strengthen child safety across organisations, including schools. The new standards recognise the critical importance of families and the broader school community in maintaining and promoting child safety and wellbeing.

East Doncaster Secondary College has reviewed and updated our child safety policies and procedures to ensure they meet the requirements of the new standards. These are available to view on our school’s website, on a Compass News Feed, at the school’s Reception.

We are committed to continuous improvement in our approach to child safety and wellbeing and welcome feedback from families and members of our school community on ways we can further strengthen our child safety policies, procedures and practices.

If you have any suggestions, comments or questions, please contact the Principal, John Roberts or Assistant Principal, Cameron Campbell.

Student Medical Expenses

Parents/carers are reminded that they are liable for all medical expenses incurred as a result of a student’s injury or medical need, including transport costs such as ambulance costs (this may include an air ambulance should that be considered necessary).

Parents/carers are responsible for any medical expenses (including ambulance costs) incurred if their child is injured or requires medical treatment or an ambulance while at school or participating in a school activity.

Parents/carers may not be called if an ambulance is required, until after an ambulance is called, depending on the situation. The College staff will use their judgment as to what action to take in cases of a student’s accident or sudden illness.

We encourage parents/carers to have up-to-date ambulance cover and medical insurance.

Damage to Students’ Personal Items/Property

Parents/guardians are reminded that any personal item/property that is brought to school by a student is the responsibility of the student and is not the responsibility of the school and is not covered by school insurance. Refer to Personal Possessions Of Students Policy in the EDSC Policy handbook on the College website. Students are responsible for personal items/property they bring to school. Neither the Department nor the school is responsible if any student’s personal item/property is lost, stolen or damaged.
