Our Kitchen Garden

Over the past few weeks, we have had many students out in our garden working away with Felicity Wallace, planting and cooking. It has been delightful to see the kids enjoying the experiences beyond the classroom.

Saltbush damper has been made, our fruit tree orchard has been planted, and children from one of our local kindergartens - Berrarbri - came to visit us on Tuesday and worked in the garden with our Year 5s.

We are thrilled that Scoresby PS offers students these rich learning opportunities beyond the classroom. Thank you to Mrs Maguire for leading the way with this work, and planning the activities with Felicity. It’s a great experience for all students involved.

Learning Specialist For The Remainder Of The Year

The role of Learning Specialist was vacated as Kate Matthews left Scoresby Primary School. The focus of the role while Kate was here was to address Literacy practice, as Literacy was an area of expertise for Kate.  We have spent the last 2 years focussing on Literacy practices at Scoresby PS and we now have the opportunity to broaden the role and work.

I sent out an Expression of Interest for the role to all teachers last week with a school-wide project linked to the application.  I am pleased to announce that last Thursday we filled the vacant Learning Specialist position with internal people.

Two teachers are pairing up to share the Learning Specialist role for the remainder of the year; Carolyn Sheaf has a passion for data analysis and data tracking, while Jordyn Whittington has a passion for all curricula being covered.  They will work collaboratively on a whole school curriculum audit, getting data exported into COMPASS and up-skilling staff to track student growth on COMPASS.

The new Learning Specialists will be given explicit time to work on their role, receiving a day every fortnight to dedicate to this work; the replacement teacher will be Kim Louwdyk (who is returning from family leave).

We look forward to seeing them shape this work for Scoresby PS.

New Shade Sail Has Arrived

Behind the Foundation classroom we have had another shade sail installed.  It is the same company that installed the one over the senior playground last year so we were able to get them to match. We are now looking to add some outdoor furniture to make the space user-friendly for our Foundation kids and other classes. This will support outdoor learning in the warmer months. We will also be adding some free-standing vegetable garden beds to define the space from the back entrance to the school.

Genes For Jeans Day

Last Friday 5th August, Scoresby PS supported Genes For Jeans Day with most staff and students wearing their jeans for the cost of a gold coin donation.  We are very excited to announce that our school raised $227.05 for this extremely worthwhile cause!  As we heard from Wendi Emmerson at assembly on the day, there are so very many people who are affected by genetic disorders, including some in our school community, that we were pleased to join in this fundraising opportunity.

National Science Week 2022

Monday 15th August- Friday 19th August

Next week is National Science Week and Scoresby Primary School will be celebrating science across the week.

The theme for National Science Week in 2022 is Glass: More than meets the eye. It is based on the UN International Year of Glass. It will celebrate the many roles that glass plays in our lives – from phone screens to optical fibre to glassware in labs – plus investigating glass as a part of our sustainable future. The uses for, and intrinsic nature of, glass in science make it a suitable topic for investigation across all strands of science education.

On Monday we will be having a whole School Science Day, where students will be exploring different aspects of glass and completing a variety of activities.

To end Science Week on Friday 19th August, we will be watching a show by The Scientwits called "The Wrong Experiment".

Family Maths Night

We will be running our Family Maths night on Wednesday 31st August from 6.00-7.30pm in our school hall.  All families are welcome to come along and play maths games with their child and learn more about games they can play with child/ren at home.

Sustainability Working Party

We are looking for parents who are interested in forming a working party to help make Scoresby Primary School a more sustainable organisation. We currently have Sustainable leaders in all classrooms from Years 3-6 and we are looking for ways to improve our current practice.  If you are interested in being part of this working party, please email Nic at nicole.rheumer@education.vic.gov.au

New Students and Enrolments for Foundation 2023

We have had quite a few new enrolments right across the board at Scoresby PS lately, with many of the new students going into our Year 3/4 classes. If you know of anyone who is considering enrolling at Scoresby PS next year, please let them know we are now taking enrolments for 2023.
