Matilda, Matilda, Matilda

Bringing a musical to the stage is a collaboration of so many creative people, working towards a final collective goal.  Singers, dancers, actors, instrumentalists, and a troupe of backstage and technical experts whose combined creative forces present the story of Matilda.  For all those familiar with Tim Minchin comedy shows, it will be no surprise that his musical score twists and turns with quirky riffs, unusual melodic themes, and bizarre combinations of instrumental timbre, not to mention the irregular time signatures. From score instructions including ‘play extremely badly and inaccurately’ and ‘play nicely now please’ Minchin somehow conjures whimsical shuffle feels from straight music and punctuates his contemporary musical genre with jug-band swing and pseudo tango.  Every musical attempts to have its big brassy chorus numbers, its comedy numbers and its deliriously captivating sensitive moments of beauty and pathos.  Minchin has nailed them all in his own unique style.  Matilda has been our opportunity to return to the stage, to gather an orchestra of fine musicians from the district, to provide a new generation of stage musicians, actors and dancers, the firsthand experience of rehearsing, perfecting, and performing live musical theatre right here in the Simons Auditorium of the Kantor Family Music and Performing Arts Centre at The Hamilton and Alexandra College.  Get your tickets and come and see us every night!
