Australian Mathematics Competition
The Senior School Library had an air of concentration and diligence last Friday with 39 students taking part in the Australian Mathematics Competition. These students were selected to participate by their mathematics teacher for their problem solving skills. Well done on being selected and your willingness to test yourself against other students from across Australia.
Japanese
Lanterns (ちょちん ) chochin
Mrs Susie Allen.
Lanterns are used throughout the year in Japan and for a wide variety of purposes. August is a special time for Japanese people as they celebrate obon (おぼん), a cultural tradition where ancestors come back from the other world. Lanterns are displayed as guides for them to find their way home to their families.Lanterns can be dedicated to a person they love by drawing a picture of that loved one on the lantern, writing a dedication and/or creating artwork about that loved one that can be placed on the lantern.
One of the cultural activities the students have been doing in class recently is to make lanterns (ちょちん ). They are made by gluing washi paper on a framework of bamboo hoops. The lanterns will be part of the display for the Winter Light Festival to be held at the Salamanca Arts Centre from August 11 to August 21. The Opening Celebration on Thursday August 11 starting at 5pm starts with an unveiling of the lanterns at 5pm in the Courtyard. The event includes a traditional Japanese dance called bonodori scheduled at 8:45pm.
Another event that is available to you is the exhibition called A Warm Glow to Remember. It is works of art by Yumemi Hiraki and is being help in the Top Gallery at Salamanca Arts Festival.
These events are available to you, your families and friends. It is an opportunity to share your interest and enjoyment of the Japanese culture outside of the classroom.
