Head of Junior School

Mrs Jo Messer

I would like to commence this week’s newsletter by thanking Mrs Karryn McCullagh for her efforts in organising the successful House Athletics Carnival in the first week back this term. Unfortunately, I was unable to be present, as I had taken a week of Long Service Leave. From all reports it was a wonderful day of sportsmanship, athleticism, and fun. Congratulations to Doyle House who were the winners on the day, who were ably led by their Captain: Christian Mazimpaka and Vice-Captain: Sam King.

I would also like to thank Mr Tom Beard for organising our Paper Pilots incursion  yesterday. James Norton (Ms Norton’s brother) and Dylan Parker have been to the world championships for paper plane flying and were the inspiration behind the movie and book, Paper Planes. Throughout the incursion, the boys learned about forces, lift, the history of flight, flight in nature and, of course, paper plane folding and flying. The aim of the day was to bring STEM fundamentals to life in a fun and engaging way.

Here are some comments from our boys:

Andrew Mooney - 6L

It was extremely enjoyable to create and learn about the physics and how the paper planes fly. I also really liked the presentation and watching Dylan and James fly paper planes.

Angus Cupit - 5R

The Paper Planes incursion was a good experience to have. It taught us how to make paper planes, but not just simple ones, we also learnt how to make some more complicated ones. It also showed us some of the physics of aerodynamics and how to make the wind flow through our planes to either make them fly faster, travel longer distances or just travel higher.

Lucas Ravani - 4P

The thing that I enjoyed the most was when we were in the hall throwing the paper planes at the same time. It was like a shower of planes everywhere. It was just so cool!

Archie Argyropoulos - 3C

The Paper Pilots showed us how to make paper planes. Some of us couldn’t do it at first so they helped us. We had a lot of fun and we are going to remember it and make more paper planes soon!

The boys can continue to explore and experiment with paper planes with guided tutorials from The Paper Pilots on the Paper Plane Hangar website.

Margin tickets will be $20 each.  Anyone who has the winning margin at the end of the AFL Grand Final will win $400.  If you have the margin at quarter time, half time or three-quarter time, you will win $50.  With all tickets sold, the P&F will raise $1,450.

Kindergarten News

The Kindergarten students are connecting to the community and investigating the city.  We wondered about cities and what is in a city, then we explored the city and where we live on Google Earth.

On Tuesday we walked from school to the Hobart Library.  We remembered the way because we had found how to get there on Google Earth.  We took our time looking at the buildings and discovering our city.  We had a lovely time reading, listening to stories, and meeting the librarian.

In the city:

“There are buildings and works and parks and people and cars and roads and traffic lights”, said Archie

“I saw lots of tall buildings, shops and trees”, said Teddy.

“There are lots of schools, humans and some trains in some cities”, said Hudson

“There are lots of traffic lights everywhere and roads and cars so you can go everywhere! Said Lennox.
