Cocurricular Report

Joe Priest
Director of Cocurricular & Head of Sport

The last bulletin contained a long list of amazing achievements that normally would be hard to top. Well, this fortnight our talented students have been doing their best and reading below it is clear that we have some very outstanding students amongst the student body who are involved in so many different activities both inside and outside of the school. It has really been an incredible month here at KWS.

Bella Scammell

A massive congratulations to ex-student Bella Scammell who has made the most of her time away from the school. Gaining selection in an Australian U23 crew straight out of school is a phenomenal achievement. Then to go onto to not only become a world champion but also set a world record in the process is an awe-inspiring achievement. The school truly looks forward to watching what Bella can achieve over the next few years.

Josie Clarke

Congratulation to Josie Clarke who has been selected in the U20’s Australian National Youth Squad for Touch Football. She attending the U20 Touch football Australia training session last weekend. The squad took part in intra-squad games throughout the weekend. This gave Josie the opportunity to wear the Australian Touch Football gear and take the field. Congratulations to Josie on this amazing achievement.

An excellent reward for a dedicated student who has worked extremely hard this year. Good luck to Audrey.

KWS Giants Match Report 30 July 2022

The weather was lovely, and we enjoyed playing in the Saturday afternoon sun against Cyms Topaz. We had a slow and flat start to the beginning of our game. We lost the first quarter by 9 points and with a lacklustre second quarter we were sadly too far behind to win the game overall. The team however, pulled their socks up at the half time and took the court with a winning energy. Despite not making a big enough come-back to win the game overall, the KWS Giants did win the second half with concerted effort and notable style. The KWS Giants adjusted their defensive tactics against an aggressive holding shooter and reduced her ability to take shots. Our centre-court players out-played their defenders as they used excellent footwork and unpredictable dodging manoeuvres to receive centre-passes. The shooters also found their groove, landing more goals and scrapping beautifully for rebounds. In the final 5 minutes of the game Lilla Attenborough, who was playing magnificently in the GA position, was unfortunately injured by a wayward leg from her GK opposition. She did however make an immense impact throughout the match, cheering the team throughout and notably leading some excellent plays from receiving the majority of centre passes and finishing those sequencing by sinking the final successful shot.  The team wishes her all the best as she rests this week in hopes of making a speedy and full recovery. Thank you to Sylvia De Graaff and Eleanor Matheson-Clark who umpired our penultimate duty; it is not always an easy task but they were both assertive and represented the school with confidence.

KWS Giants Match Report 23 July 2022

The Giants were the victim of two forfeits in the final two rounds of Term 2 which meant they were a little out of sync when it came to their challenging match-up against the KWS Firebirds.  The Firebirds desire to chase down every ball and intercept voluminous lobs from the Giants was the clencher in Giants demise at the conclusion of the game. Despite a loss this week, all players displayed excellent sportsmanship and played with tenacity until the end-whistle. Prue was a delight to was watch as she took control of the midcourt, playing out of position in Centre court and special mention to defenders Jade and Eleanor for their countless intercepts resulting from excellent anticipation and special awareness. Jade also had the opportunity to utilise her clandestine and quite impressive shooting talent in the final quarter.  Pictured are the KWS Firebirds (left) and KWS Giants (Right).

15As vs OHS Gatsbys

This last weekend, the mighty 15As played against OHS Gatsbys. Winning the toss meant that we were shooting into the sun first to ensure we didn’t have to battle that element in the final quarter! The girls started well but it was too close for comfort for the coach, so a little team huddle at quarter time and some morale boosting by injured teammate Emily, put us on the right track for the second quarter resulting in an equal score at half time! Phhhhew. The final result saw the 15As win by 21 goals, thanks to the amazing teamwork getting the ball into the star shooters of Alice S and Liv! Special mention to the star defense of Alice H, Prue and Xanthe. It’s wonderful to watch the girls play as a unit and build each other up on the court. Bring on next weekend!

Rugby Report

Last Saturday saw our boys take the early morning trek over the mountains to face St Pius X College. With illness and injuries effecting a number of teams, many of our boys were called upon to play more than one game. What a pleasure it was to witness these lads step up and support both the school and their mates when required. Many of our boys can consider themselves proud Kinross rugby men, and this pride will need to be on show this coming weekend.

This Saturday we host St Stanislaus' and we are expecting a wonderful day of Rugby. Any parents who are willing to donate some time to the canteen or BBQ can do so by registering on this link https://www.trybooking.com/CBNOQ

It is our final home game for the season and as such we are hoping for a big crowd to support our boys. Given Bathurst is close by, games will kick off at 10.00am. We ask all boys to be at their game a minimum of 30 minutes before kick off.

Finally, all Rugby parents have been emailed details regarding the Rugby Presentation dinner. Please note tickets must be purchased for all students as well as parents.

Hockey Report

Well done to Ollie Garard & Hunter Hobbs. Both boys have been selected in the NSW state squads through the club representative pathway. We wish both boys well as they head off to trial for final selection. A fantastic achievement.

KWS 1sts vs Molong Magpies

The KWS First XI Hockey team came away with a hard fought and well-deserved win on the weekend. Against a skilled opposition they held their own and proved that they are ready for finals hockey. A fantastic effort from Maka Mutyiri in goals meant that we could focus on our attacking quarter. Control and composure from Sophie Leulf in the Midfield kept the pressure on our opposition and we secured a 3-2 win.

Goals to Mckenzie Carr, Taylah Hobbs and Phoebe Smith.

KWS Hornets vs KWS Suns – lost 2-1

The girls played some of their best hockey in the first game back, quickly establishing a 1-0 lead. The suns fought back to equalise in the second half, and with both teams strengthening their defence, goal opportunities were limited for both sides. The game looked to be over with a draw, however the suns scored in the last five seconds to win the game 2-1. A tough loss for the girls, but they’ve all improved immensely since the season began and there are lots of positives to be taken from this game!

KWS Suns vs KWS Hornets – won 2-1

The KWS Suns had a fantastic match against the KWS Hornets on Monday 25th July. We've seen a remarkable improvement in ability throughout the season which last week translated into a win. The boys are starting to work much better as a team and think more strategically on the field. The score was 1-1 in the final few minutes of the game until, out of nowhere, forward, and top goal scorer Oli Charlton broke away and scored in the top left corner in the last 5 seconds to steal the match 2-1. Congratulations to the team. Now to reach the top of the pool.

KWS Knicks vs KWS Spurs – 1-1

The Knicks faced a rematch with Spurs to start term 3. The two teams train together and know who the biggest hitters are, who can tackle well, who runs fast and who passes the ball. This was always going to be a tight game!

Knicks took the lead in the first half and held on well into the second half. But the Spurs found a way back and the game finished a 1-1 draw.  Well done to all players!

KWS Raptors vs KWS Warriors – 1-0 loss

The Raptors continue to improve each week, the team has worked hard to support each other, strengthen their skills in both defense and attack and are stringing passes together like they have been playing for years! This week we were challenged by the ever in-form Warriors. Our team started strong, using our width in attack and persisting in defense. A disallowed goal would have seen us celebrate a 1-1 draw (to us it was a draw!), all in all a wonderful display of determination and superb effort. A huge thanks to Phoebe for playing in goals, she was like a professional, moving across the goal and defending the space like a professional. Special mention must also go to each of our team members – Bree, Hattie, Tessa, Hannah, Alice, Amaya, Gus, Brooke, Georgia, Charlotte, Chloe and Phoebe. Each week you guys impress me with your determination, team-work, enthusiasm and good nature. I can feel a celebratory goal or two in our near future!!

KWS Cavaliers vs KWS Raptors – 1-0 win

A challenging game between the KWS Cavaliers and the KWS Raptors, both teams eager to win. No goals were scored in the first half making both teams determined to score, this resulted in a fast, hard and competitive game. Ruby Smith used her hitting skills to her advantage, scoring an amazing goal off a short corner received from Zoe Bird, putting the Cavaliers in the lead with minutes to go. The defenders Elke Sweetapple and Lolli Pasquali fighting hard to not let any goals in for the remaining minutes. The Cavaliers received a well-deserved win as high performance was performed across the whole team.

KWS Thunder vs KWS Hornets – 1-0 loss

A battle between the year 11 and year 12 teams. This was a close game from start to finish. Maka was outstanding in goals and made it extremely difficult for the Hornets to score. Megan Connan and Josie Muddle tackled well at the back and turned over plenty of ball. With a quick half time talk and a focus on some different tactics the Thunder side started making inroads in the Hornets defence. Lucy Scammell, Milly Lane and Heidi Ferguson combined up front and in the end were unlucky not to level the score. Credit the goes to the Thunder team who fought right until the end.
