Year3

Reading:

We applaud our grade 3’s on their efforts during this term and demonstrating resilience. During this term, our students have focused on Transactional texts and Diaries. They have explored the features, purpose and structure of letters and dairy entries whilst at school and working remotely.

We are beginning to delve into Science-Fiction where students will learn about futuristic sciences and technology in multi-modal forms.

Maths:

Students have made a fast start in their new topics for Maths. So far this Term in Year 3, we have been learning about 2D shape and Fractions. In our shape unit we have been labelling vertices and sides as well as beginning to learn about lines of symmetry, (did you know some shapes have more than 1 line of symmetry?) We also completed some shape riddles, which were fun!

We learnt that the bottom number is called the denominator and the top number is called the numerator. The denominator tells us how many parts there are where the numerator tells how many each person gets. We have learnt problem solving strategies to help us with Fractions. Eg.: 5 shared between 2 is 2 and a half. We have been practising fractions in our Zoom classes.

Writing:

What a start to Term 3. In Writing, the Grade 3s have been writing their own diary entries. They have focused on writing in fist-person and in past tense. This has been an opportunity for the students to reflect on Remote Learning 5.0 and for some, the excitement of our Legoland excursion.

We are starting to write texts of the Sci-Fi genre where students will write fictionalised stories about technology, time travel, outer space, or scientific experiences, with or without the presence of aliens.

PBL:

In the first week of school, our Year 3 students took a trip to Legoland! The students were able to explore different rides, build cars, design minifigures and even get sprayed with water in the 4D cinema! The excursion was an entry event to our new Project based learning project for term 3 called ‘Forces and Functions.’ In this unit, students will be engaged in the practical application of physics. They will learn how forces can be exerted on one object by another as they design and build a force powered car using the design process. Below are some diary entries from our third graders about their Legoland experience:

We thank all the teachers, staff and students for making sure the excursion went smoothly and for everyone to have a fun experience!

Curriculum Units:

Reading:• Film Study / Wall-E

Writing:• Sci-Fi Narratives

Numeracy:• Graphs & Data• Fractions

What’s been happening in Grade 4.

The start of this term has been a little bumpy. Lockdown 5.0 was thrown at us, but what has been amazing to watch is how resilient the Grade 4 students are.

Seesaw has been rolled out to all families and it has been great to see how everyone has adapted to this new way of learning from home. Zooms have become the new normal again.

Students have been logging onto 2 zooms a day to engage, stay connected and learn. It has been great to see their faces each day whilst being at home.

It is only the start of the term and there is a long journey ahead. Keep up the great work Grade 4s and we look forward to seeing you in person soon.

Year 5

Reading

Throughout remote learning the grade 5’s have started reading their new class text ‘Loyal Creatures’. The text is set in Australia and is about a young 15 year old boy Frank who goes off to fight in the war with his father and 2 horses.

The students have really enjoyed reading the text together in their daily zooms and dissecting it in detail in order to learn how to answer questions in full sentences and draw on evidence from the text.

Writing

In writing the students have been learning about important events in history to prepare themselves for writing their own historical narrative. They read up on Titanic and the volcano eruption in Pompeii. They have really enjoyed drafting up their plans to assist them writing their historical Titanic Narrative.

Maths

Students have really loved continuing their learning on Angles in mathematics. They have been investigating lots of different angles they can find in their own homes and then having fun in their class rooms by participating in interactive quizzes on zoom to test their knowledge.
