Parvana: building empathy

This term, Year 7 English students are studying the text 'Parvana', by Deborah Ellis. The novel Parvana tells a tale that follows the story of a young girl growing up in Afghanistan, as she struggles to make a life for herself and her family under the harsh rule of the Taliban. Living in a nation with decimated infrastructure, Parvana and her family live in a small apartment without running water, and Parvana must spend hours carrying buckets of water from a communal tap up seven flights of stairs.

In order to gain an understanding of the reality of living without running water, Year 7 students participated in a water carrying activity. Students had to carry a bucket of water from the TAS centre to the garden beds at the front of the Resource Centre and water the covered gardens. Students reflected upon the privilege of living in a community with running water, developing their understanding of what it means to be a global citizen.

PDHPE Update

Students in Year 11 PDHPE have been studying Fitness Choices in their Options section of PDHPE. They have been investigating what it means to be ‘fit’ for different individuals and how people in the Echuca/Moama region can engage in Physical Activity and Fitness for their health.

Over the past fortnight we teamed up with two local businesses to take our students through group fitness classes. First up was a Sky Yoga class, run by owner/operator Sheron Gough of Sherondipity Yoga in Moama. Sheron was amazing and went out of her way to make our student’s time there extra special. Students were shown how to manipulate the yoga silks for different conditioning purposes such as core strength and flexibility, and were also lucky enough to finish with a meditation session.

This week we continued our investigation, supported by the team at Next Level Fitness who took our Year 11’s through a Spin Class. Polar opposite to the yoga session, students were pushed to their limits on the bikes, raising their heart rates and working up a sweat! A special mention to Tom at Next Level who conducted the class for us.

We are back at Next Level Fitness in the coming week for a functional resistance session to complete our investigation, this one sounds tough! A huge thank you to the team for accommodating us and taking us through all the options they provide at their gym.

The Australian Mathematics Competition

The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) has been held annually since 1978.  One of the largest annual events on the Australian education calendar, the AMC was the first competition of its kind in Australia and is now one of the largest of its type in the world. More than 30 countries participate each year. It is an engaging 30-problem competition that demonstrates the importance and relevance of mathematics in students’ everyday lives.

Congratulations to the 84 students across Years 7 to 11 who took on the challenge of competing this week.  The Mathematics department is excited to see what you can do.

Year 7 Science

The School's resident horticulturist, Mr John Pearce, enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time indoors with Mrs Paul's Year 7 Science class, where he explained how to identify and classify native Australian plants.

Year 11 Electric Chemical Reactions

This week the Year 11 Chemistry class was exploring electrochemistry by preparing their own galvanic cells and measuring the voltage each one produced. By moving around the room and taking measurements from each group's set up they were able to determine the effect of changing a number of variables on the voltage produced.
