Year 7 Health – ElephantEd Workshops

Our Year 7 students are currently learning about respectful relationships and gender in their Health classes. Over the past week and next week, during their Health class, each homeroom will have a facilitator from ElephantEd deliver a workshop on gender.

The workshop will challenge traditional concepts about gender, gender roles, and delve in to the world of gender and identity. We hope that the workshops will help our girls to learn more about gender stereotypes and gender identity and help to promote acceptance, equality for all people and inclusive environments.

Some feedback from our first homeroom that participated in the workshop was:

  • ‘It was very interesting to learn about and it was also enjoyable and quite fun.’
  • ‘I’d love to experience more of these workshops.’
  • ‘I wish it went for longer.’
  • It was really interesting and I learnt things that I didn’t know.’

ElephantEd are partners with Headspace, the national youth mental health foundation and the Australian Research Centre in sex, health and society. One of their main aims is to empower young people to make informed, positive and safe decisions about sexuality, relationships and growing up.

VET Sport and Recreation

On Wednesday 28 August the Unit 2 & 4 VET Sport and Recreation classes headed to Dolamore Oval to assist at the Mordialloc District Primary Athletics Carnival. Assisting at carnivals such as these allows the students to demonstrate their level of competency in a practical setting in units such as ‘Conduct sport and recreation sessions’. The girls helped out in the running of the field events as well as placings at the end of the races.

From the organiser of the carnival..

“Just wanted to pass on my thanks to you and the girls for all your help at our Athletics carnival on Wednesday. The weather wasn’t ideal at the end, but it was really pleasing to see the girls persisting in trying conditions.”

Year 9 Outdoor Education

The Year 9 Outdoor Education classes have been fine-tuning their bike riding skills in preparation for their ride to Port Melbourne in the last week of term. The girls have had some beautiful weather for riding and were even fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of some playful dolphins around Beaumaris Yacht Club last week.

High Ropes Course at the Melbourne Cable Park

On 22 August, Year 11 Physical Education students participated in a High Ropes activity course. The course was aimed to both challenge our skill levels and encourage us to try a new type of physical activity that many of us had not tried before or don’t have regular access to.
