PRACTICISING SKILLS – COOKING – ONLINE LEARNING

During Lockdown 4 practicing practical skills, like cooking and sewing is challenging and often not achievable,  due to lack of equipment or facilities in which to practice the life skill.

The following students are commended for their application to their learning and

demonstrating to their teacher their abilities.

Michael Rossingoli – Year 8 - made a Chocolate Chip Slice and Waffles

Adysen Puister in Year 10 – make pancakes

All students are commended for their efforts to their learning.  Students are encouraged in Food Technology to cook and practice their skills at home – which include not only cooking, but cleaning up and maintaining food in safe temperatures.

BANKSIA KITCHEN GARDEN

The kitchen gardens at Banksia campus are now in Winter mode.

Year 8 students recently helped clean out the gardens of the weeds and the spent vegetables.  All the waste was put into the compost tumbler to recycle, as is the compostable food waste that is generated by the kitchens.

Students planted out a number of different types of garlic (to be harvested in November/December), as well as peas, cauliflower, lettuce and beetroot.

All the herbs and vegetables grown in these gardens are used in the kitchen for the students who undertake Food Technology and Food Studies along with VET Hospitality training.

DID YOU KNOW?

Keysborough College Libraries are not only physical, they are digital as well!

As a student at Keysborough College, you have access to our online ePlatform. On the ePlatform you will find a vast range of fiction and non-fiction e- and audio books. This is incredibly helpful for when those snap lockdowns are inflicted upon us, and we are not able to venture into the physical libraries. Or leave our houses, even! (Hopefully there’ll be no more lockdowns for a while, or ever again, but you never know!)

How to access the Keysborough Library ePlatform, you may ask?

  • On the school intranet, under Resources, click on ‘Library’.
  • Under eBook borrowing, click on ‘Link to eBook borrowing’.
  • If you are asked to sign in, sign in with your student ID and Keysborough password.
  • Click on ‘Start browsing’.
  • The little ‘headphones’ symbol in the bottom right of the book image indicates it’s an audio book (for listening). Otherwise it’s an e-book (for reading).

Start browsing!

If you are looking for something to read that is reassuring, motivating, uplifting, or just generally life-improving, head to the extensive ‘Wellness’ collection that you will find on the ePlatform. There’s a huge range of books there to read (or listen to), during tough times. Check out the photos for a tiny sample!

Happy reading from the Keysborough Library Team!

Cancer Council Fundraiser - Banksia

Friday, 15th June, 2021

Written by Mary Le (year 12)

After many weeks of thorough planning, the College student representatives hosted a fundraiser for the Cancer Council on the 18th of June. Plenty of students arrived in free dress with a gold coin donation to help raise funds to ensure a cancer free future for all Australians. To raise as much money as possible, the College staff and students were treated to a sausage sizzle during lunch, with the queue extending ‘out the door’! Plenty of positive feedback was provided; many students and staff delighted with the massive success of the event, with $369 being raised for the Cancer Council. The efforts of the School Captains and Leaders  for their work collecting funds, creating advertising and rearranging the event are to be praised.

The College representatives would like to thank the VET Hospitality students, Ms McInnes and Ms Opie for their hard work. We would also like to specially thank Devin Ranasinghe from year seven and his sister Levinya who both made a generous separate donation to the Cancer Council along with the College’s donations. They fundraised in 2020, however, their plans fell through with the effect of the pandemic. The College leadership crew would also like to extend a warm thank you to all staff and students for their support!
