Remote Course Information Evening Wednesday 21st July 4pm – 8pm

As noted in the Emmaus published 14 July 2021

This will be a remote event that provides opportunity for parents and students to ‘meet’ with Course Advisors, Subject Specialists, attend a live Q&A, as well as accessing a Help Desk.

Students will be emailed their Access Guides, just prior to the evening commencing, which contains their User Code and Password, to log on to Web Preferences.

  • Course Advisors – these 15 minute Microsoft Teams sessions will be pre-booked via the PAM Parent Teacher Interview tab and these sessions will focus on the holistic course selection process as well as advice on where to access post schooling information.
  • Careers and Pathways advice: Elly Martin (Careers and Pathways advisor) and Siobhan Thomas (former Career and Pathways Advisor).
  • Applied Learning and VCAL advice: Ben Cunningham
  • General Subject Selection Advice: Range of experienced staff
  • Subject Specialists – Each Learning Leader and a Subject Specialist Staff Member for each subject will be available for pre-booked 15 minute Microsoft Teams subject specific information. These sessions are to provide students and parents with subject curriculum content and assessment information.
  • Live Q&A Session 7 – 8pm– This 1 hour live Q& A Microsoft Teams session will be aimed at answering “live" parent questions about programs, how to complete student options and general year level questions.  Michelle Lilford, Jason Blackburn and Narelle Hunt will host this session.
  • Help Desk – a space where parents and students can submit a question.

Other activities we hope will support decision-making:

  • Course Information Digital Information Sessions for Year 8, 9, 10 relating to 2022 Course Information and subject selection, occurred on Thursday 17 June.
  • College Assembly Careers Update on 22 July.
  • Year 11 and 12 Futures Arvo on 29 July (Lesson 4 and Lesson 5, includes TIS Presentation, Morrisby Careers and Year 12 VTAC session)
  • Year 9 Careers Day on Monday 2 August (includes attending WGTTA Open Day) (NB: this was previously 27 July to coincide with Job Skills which has now been cancelled)
  • Year 9 Morrisby Interviews continue.
  • Individual student appointments continue – students can make these via the link on Simon using their school email and password.

Reschedule of Year 10 Work Experience

Year 10 students and their parents/guardians will recall the cancellation of Year 10 work experience and SWL in June and are asked to note the following:

Year 10 Applied SWL Placement – 2 weeks commencing 4 October

Year 10 Students (not Applied) – 1 week commencing 11 October

Students are encouraged to make contact with their host employer/supervisor ASAP and discuss the possibility of a reschedule.

New Work Experience or SWL arrangement forms will need to be completed.

However, if students had completed and submitted (to Simon) their relevant Safe@Work Certificates (General and Industry Specific) and Induction Handbook, and they maintain the same placement, these will not need to be redone.

A change of placement may mean one or both the Industry Specific Certificate and Induction Handbook (Section 3 only) need to be re-done.

Helpful career strategies we’ve been talking about lately

  • Traffic Light Strategy, is a preference/ranking system which is great for decision-making relating to a preferred school program and elective choices, but could easily be adapted to post-school options and further study interest areas.
  • Informational Interview, is an informal meeting (via phone, virtually or in person) between a person seeking further information about a particular job, career or industry and a person already established in that field of work.
