Kitchen Garden Update

It is really wonderful to see  the students returning to school and we're really excited to be able to hold our kitchen and garden classes again, albeit in a slightly altered format.

Miss Kearney ‘s class was first to be back in the kitchen. The class has been split into two groups and will rotate weekly, each group will make the same recipe.

This week the made “Wraps of the imagination”. This involved a variety of techniques that the children will use in the kitchen on a regular basis. They learnt how to peel, slice, shred and grate a variety of items for their wraps. The children then created a wrap with the ingredients of their choice and had a picnic style lunch on the grassed area.

Our chickens are back from their extended vacation at “The Mercers”. We would like to thank them for looking after our girls and keeping them for much longer than the  two weeks originally proposed.

They have settled back in really well and have already started laying eggs.

Today I have attached recipes for “Building your own Wrap” .

Remember these wraps are only limited by your imagination. Try adding a dip instead of mayonnaise, sweet chilli sauce, your favourite sliced meat. Wraps can even make a delicious evening meal by using some cooked chicken or beef.

Our grade 3/4 students will return to the kitchen for the last 2 weeks of this term and then continue  their rotation throughout term 3.  That format will remain the same with students split into 3 groups Kitchen, Garden and Science. They will rotate through each activity on a weekly basis. All students will come together at the end of the session to enjoy a shared dining experience of the day's cooking session.

It is a really exciting time for these students as they get to explore the kitchen and new foods, along with different ways to prepare old favourites. For many of these students it is the first time they have prepared food to share and to work as part of a team that requires time management and very careful reading of procedures. One of the most enjoyable parts of their time in the kitchen is the shared dining.

Thanks everyone, stay safe and enjoy your  cooking and gardening.
