Wireless headphones and gaming headsets

With greater mobility and less tangles, wireless headphones and gaming headsets are becoming the preferred choice for listening to music, TV shows and gaming. In fact, some new electronic devices no longer support older-styled headphones.

Age guide

There is no specific age recommended for most headphones or headsets, however it’s important to consider your child’s age and development. Loud music or noises can cause damage to the developing inner ear of younger children.

What to look out for

  • Inbuilt cameras and microphones may allow your child to voice and video chat with others while playing multiplayer online games.
  • Extended use at high volume can cause damage to young children's ears.
  • Earbuds or in-ear headphones are strongly discouraged for children.
  • Battery life varies — most models can be charged via USB or docking station, but if you’re relying on some quiet time on a long road trip or flight, make sure they’re fully charged before departure!

How to stay safe

  • Set boundaries around times and areas in the house headphones and headsets can be used for gaming and chatting to others.
  • Only pair via Bluetooth with another device you are aware of and can control.
  • Some models of wireless headphones are specifically designed for kids, with built-in volume-limiting that restricts sound to levels appropriate for young ears.
  • It's worth noting that the maximum volume recommendation for children is 85 decibels, as recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
  • It is generally recommended for children not to wear headphones for periods of two hours or more without a break.
