GOLD, GOLD, GOLD!

Last week the TPS printing press was running hot with the breaking news of the Gold Rush in Ballarat! Grade 4/5/6 students travelled back in time to plan, draft, edit, revise and publish a newspaper article about the Gold Rush. Students reported on the living conditions at the gold fields, the unrest between miners and police, the Eureka Stockade and the treatment of Chinese miners. Students were able to make links between their current Inquiry unit about Australian History and Writing unit about Informative Texts. Here are some examples of the authentic looking newspaper articles created by Grade 4/5/6 students!

Million Dollar Homes

The grade 4/5/6 students were set the challenge of designing their own million dollar home. They had to use length times width to work out the area of each rectangular or square room in their floor plans. Their million dollar home had to include 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, a lounge and some other personal additives such as gaming rooms and cinemas.

As the students  were learning about multiplication this project allowed them to use their problem solving skills to work out the area of the different living areas of their floor plan.

Staying Active

This term in PE, 4/5/6 students have been enjoying being active whilst at home. They have focused on keeping their body moving and have participated in personal training type exercises and have described how their body has responded to these exercises. 4/5/6 students have also been exposed to the many ways they can keep fit and healthy at home using resources that are already out there. Many high profile individuals and clubs have created training programs for kids to access whilst they have been unable to participate in their regular sporting activities. Students have been made aware of these fantastic resources and were given ownership over the sports they would like to participate in, whether it be to improve their skills for a sport they already play or learn new skills in a sport they may not have participated in.
