Visual Communication & Design

Melbourne CBD (Year 10)

The air was crisp, the sky was a perfect shade of blue – the 8th of March was a great day to venture into the city. We, the year ten Visual Communication design students, took the 8:47am train to Flinders Street station.

When we arrived in the city, we walked around to look at many spaces that contained street art which was the purpose of our visit.  There was some amazing pieces of street art. The excursion was aimed to give us ideas for our upcoming assessment where we are designing a skateboard, and an understanding of street art and the different artists in our local community - Melbourne.

Throughout the day we discussed the different artists and the meaning behind each of the street art designs. We started off our day by walking to ‘Flinders Way’ where we saw Lisa King’s giant sleeping female figure which is featured on the wall outside of Brunetti’s. We then followed the trail towards ‘Presgraves Place’ where it is home to Melbourne’s most unique small – scale street art – the art is framed in mixed – media works.

We walked to many more laneways finishing off at Meyer’s Place where we viewed the giant Mike Makatron mural, Jungle Funk. The Jungle Funk Mural was created as part of the ‘Green Your Laneways’ project. It is really cool. It includes huge flowers and fruit trees. But in amongst the foliage we see images of manmade objects – like the artist is trying to make a statement about the influence people have on a natural landscape. This mural dominates the lane. Mike Makatron is a Melbourne-based artist who has created public works worldwide. In Melbourne, his work can be found at the Melbourne Zoo, the Melbourne Airport and heaps of city laneways.

After a mammoth walk around the city, we got a chance to break away independently for lunch and then to finally meet at the train station to venture home -overall, an amazing day in the Melbourne CBD.

Year 12 Top Designs

On Thursday 11th May, Year 12 Visual Communications and Designs students attended an excursion to the Melbourne Museum to view 2023 TOP DESIGNS folios.

Mary Catania

Visual Coomunication & Design Teacher

Last Thursday the VCE Visual Communication Design students visited the Melbourne Museum to view the TOP DESIGNS from 2022. There were several folios and final presentations ranging from Interior Design, Architecture, Game design, Product and furniture designs and corporate identity folios. The purpose for this visit was to help inspire us to select and develop our ideas for the upcoming SAT folio for Visual Communication Design.

The folio’s that stood out the most for me were the ‘Urban Fringe’ set including the branding, cheese packaging and service board made by Aidan Maher, as well as William Mays’s ‘CANVAS pod’ which included a scaled model and brand identity.

This excursion has helped provide us with inspiration on how to inform our folios, and guide us on how our folios should be presented for assessment. Furthermore, the folios inspired us and encouraged us to aim high and try to achieve high results. It also gave me an insight towards what sorts of products or designs the top students of the state actually created, and the things that I could possibly design.

Later we walked around Lygon Street in Carlton to find more inspiration for our folios – here I was able to get the idea of possibly designing a restaurant, as we were eating our lunch. Because we have to design two folios, I also had the idea of designing the logo of the restaurant, and placing it into context on the menu, and perhaps the cutlery as well. Our time spent on Lygon street allowed me to be inspired by the architecture, which is most likely my second folio, and how structures work together to form a design.

We really enjoyed the day as it was exceptionally good weather, and we got to spend time with friends outside of school, while conducting very important research that will help us with our upcoming folio, which is beginning this week. Overall it was a great day to get ahead of our work, eat lunch, and then grabs some ice cream later :)
