Year Three

Dear Year Three families,

Phew! And just like that, NAPLAN is officially over. The Year Three students have been working extremely hard to consolidate and refine the learning taken place throughout their primary school experience. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to share what they know and will provide evidence of learning for the school community when results are published. Now, however, it is time to celebrate and remember how far we have come this term. With Term One almost over, the Year Three’s are ready to bring on the last weeks of school with our Saltwater Swimming Program!

In Reading, the Year Three’s continued working on the concept of Question, Answer and Relationship. We have been practising each of the four parts of the strategy in depth this term, but this week students combined their knowledge of ‘In the Text’ and ‘In My Head’ questions, to answer an array of mixed questions. It was then up to students to evaluate the type of question and answer it appropriately. To end their week, the Year Three's participated in Reader's Theatre, practising reading aloud with fluency and expression.

In Writing, students deepened their understanding of narratives and persuasive writing by analysing the differences between the two. The Year Three’s were thinkers by unpacking the structural and grammatical features in each genre, to support them when identifying what a NAPLAN prompt is asking of them.

In Maths, the Year Three’s began consolidating their knowledge about representing and calculating costs using Australian currency. Starting by identifying the order of coins, to using the canteen menu, to find the change given after buying different items. The students also practised number patterns and identifying the rule within the sequence of numbers.

Lastly in Inquiry, students have been continuing to explore rules and laws. Although it has been a jam-packed week with our core subjects, the Year Three’s had an opportunity to use what they have learnt during our first Unit of Inquiry, to create a new community with rules and consequences. It was exciting to see students being knowledgeable about what is needed to keep their community safe and in order.

Reminders:

  • Absences: If your child is away, parents/carers need to log this on XUNO to minimise any unexplained absences.
  • Hats: Please ensure your child brings a wide, brimmed hat to school. These are required for Term One and Term Four.
  • iPads: They need to be bought to school each day as these are a vital tool used for learning in the classroom. Remember to make sure these are fully charged.
  • Classroom doors open at 8.20am for continuous entry to begin our lessons sharply at 8:30am. If your child arrives after 8.40am please ensure they collect a late pass from the office.
  • Homework: Students are expected to complete their homework each fortnight.
  • Swimming: In Weeks 10 and 11, the Year Three swimming program will be running. If your child is not attending swimming, each day they will be split into another class/year level.
