Year Two

Dear Year Two Families,

Our Year Two students have continued to settle into our school routines and have been so excited with completing our first unit of inquiry "Who we are".

Reading:

In Reading, students have continued to focus on the Reading Comprehension Strategy of Predicting. They have practised making predictions before, during and after reading a text and using evidence to justify these predictions. Students have been reviewing our decoding strategies each week as well, revisiting the different ways we can solve tricky words to help us read and understand new texts.

Writing:

Students have continued with our writing unit of Procedural texts. Students have developed an understanding around what it means to write a procedural text including the aim, materials, sequence and illustrations. The Year Two students have explored many different procedures including how to make a healthy pizza, which links to our current Unit of Inquiry (My lifestyle choices can influence my health). Students were so creative with this task and used their knowledge to come up with some healthy pizza options! Students also went through the writing process to write a speech about  their chosen health topic from  the dimensions of health (Emotional, Spiritual, Physical and Social), linking to our current Unit of Inquiry.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, the Year Two students have continued to explore Place  Value, Whole numbers and Shape. Fluid groups have commenced across all grade 2 classes with a key focus of whole number manipulation and representation.

Students have also been exploring 2D and 3D objects. They have taken a deeper look into vertices, edges and faces of shape. Students have also generated 3D objects from a net, being able to identify 2D objects within that object.

Inquiry:

We have wrapped up our first unit of inquiry looking into how lifestyle choices can influence our health. This week the Year Two students are experiencing provocation days for our second unit of inquiry, which is focused around the transdisciplinary theme of 'How the World Works' .

Reminders:

  • Absences: If your child is away, parents/carers need to log this on XUNO to minimise any unexplained absences.
  • Hats: Please ensure your child brings a wide, brimmed hat to school. These are required for Term One and Term Four.
  • iPads: They need to be bought to school each day as these are a vital tool used for learning in the classroom. Remember to make sure these are fully charged.
  • Classroom doors open at 8.20am for continuous entry to begin our lessons sharply at 8:30am. If your child arrives after 8.40am please ensure they collect a late pass from the office.
  • Homework: Students are expected to complete their homework each week.
  • Swimming: In Weeks 10 and 11, the Year 3 swimming program will be running. If your child is not attending swimming, each day they will be split into another class/year level.
