What’s been happening in Grade 3!!

Written by Avi and Katerina!!!!

3D has been learning about types of prayer like sorry, thanks, informal and formal prayers. We have made prayer cubes. They look like this. The prayer monitors sometimes roll one of these cubes to see what type of prayer our class will do. You can pray in many different ways from meditating in peace or scoring goals. Anything can be  transformed into any type of prayer. Because of lent  we have a purple  cloth on our prayer table. During lent we learn about Jesus praying in the desert for forty days and forty nights trusting God and how we can make extra effort to be like Jesus during lent. The prayer monitors chose what we should do for morning prayer, today it was yoga prayer as you can see in the pictures below.

We have also learned about the work of Carita and the money we raise for Project Compassion, like to help Laxmi. Laxmi is a girl who is from Nepal and she is 16 years old. Her family is  very poor. Sadly her father passed away when Laxmi was 10 years old. Laxmi was eager to help her community to grow stronger, she held parades and public chants. After Laxmi finished school  she decided to work at the children's learning centre that is at her school. She had  brought up the thought that there should be water taps at her school.

Each child in 3D  has written a prayer for Laxmi. If you're wanting to help Laxmi ,donate some money to Caritas Australia  Caritas Nepal that could make a huge difference to others lives. Click on the link below to learn more.Laxmi's story | Project Compassion 2023

In the Inquiry unit, we learned about our family and ancestors. We have also done family trees with all our family members on it. (Creating them was so much fun I loved it so much).

In writing we have been working on Persuasive and Narrative writing. We’re also focusing on contractions for example (she’ll be happy to come) is a contraction. We have also been practising NAPLAN which is coming up very soon for year three and year five. How exciting!

When we do library we sometimes mix  3E and 3D together. It's a lot of fun!

We have also been doing problem solving in maths and here is one example of the maths we’ve been doing. (Mae’s maths book is in the picture below).

Each of us got a partner and made up our own problem the other person solved ( I had a lot of fun making up problems!)

We said goodbye to Lachlan Bales last week. We gave him a surprise poster with a message from every child in year 3. We all wish him all the best!

Our class has been very proud of a girl in our class, the amazing, outstanding Lily Iva who entered little athletics when she was 5, but that's not the story. A few weeks ago Lily entered state championships for under 10 and Lily is only 8, but she still came 1st in high jump and in the 60 metre sprint she came second! That's a big achievement for a young girl, don’t you think?

Also we have also discussed that there are qualities that both genders can have, like gentleness, respect, patience, kindness, competitiveness, strength, kindness and so much more!

Well, that’s all from 3D for now! Thanks for reading.

What’s been happening in Year 5 / 6?

Water Safety Program: Sailing at Albert Park Lake

The two day sailing component of the Year 5/6 Water Safety Program at Albert Park Lake was a great success, with students having a fantastic time learning about water safety and sailing.  Throughout the program, the students were able to work together well, demonstrating excellent teamwork and communication skills. They learned about the importance of wearing life jackets, how to navigate a boat, and how to respond in emergency situations. The program was not only educational but also fun, allowing students to experience the thrill of sailing while also building confidence and resilience. Overall, the Year 5/6 Water Safety Program at Albert Park Lake Sailing was an excellent opportunity for students to learn important life skills and have fun in the process.

ZOOM with Caritas Australia

During Lent, the Year 5 / 6 students have been fortunate to be able to participate in a unique opportunity to engage directly with Caritas Australia’s program staff and partners. The students have been able to ask questions through ZOOM to people who live in Vietnam, Nepal and in Indigenous communities in Western Sydney.

Our students asked some thought provoking questions to people from the Caritas Organisation.

After taking a glimpse into the lives of others, the St Cecilia’s Year 5 / 6 students are very keen to raise money to help the lives of others.
