Maths

We have been working very hard in maths over the past few weeks.

The children have learnt about location and focused on using directional language such as forwards, backwards, left and right to give a set of instructions to a partner or to the bee bots.

The children had so much fun programming the bee bots to follow their instuctions. Some children challenged themselves to build racing tracks for the bee bots to move through or set themselves a goal for their bee bots to get to a certain location on a grid. We really focussed on our left and right directional language so our bee bot moved in the correct direction.

We have also been working on the chance of an event occuring. We started by discussing the language of chance and how we would describe the chance of an everyday event occuring. For example the chance of Miss Kim's car growing wings and flying is impossible. We put these words along a line to help us understand that the word we use changes depending on the chance of the event occuring. This is known as a probability scale, here is our scale.

Impossible                   Unlikely                       50/50                             Likely                       Certain

Then we discussed the chance of selecting a particular item from a jar such as a coloured counter. Here are some of the childrens jars or counters and the probability statement they made about their jar.

Finally we have been learning about patterns. We have explored two types of patterns. The first is repeating patterns that follow a rule such as AB AB or AABBC AABBC. We discussed that our pattern could be repeated focusing on the colour, shape, size, letter or animal. We made our own repeating pattern then we had to look at a friends pattern, spot the pattern and repeat it. Here are our repeating patterns.

We have now begun exploring the second type of patterns known as growing patterns. The children explored how a pattern can become bigger by a consistent unit. We used match sticks to create a growing pattern that increase by 1 stick each time. The children did a fantastic job and were very creative as they explored making a pattern grow.

We are also practising and looking forward to our special whole school Easter Holy Week prayer service that will be held Wednesday the 5th of April at 2.40 in the Red Centre.

Can you guess what our Holy Week scene is from our practise here. Come and join us next week to find out.

Karen and I would like to say a very big thank you to all 12K families for your ongoing support throughout term one.

We wish you all a wonderful Easter break!
