Prep

Congratulations to all the Prep students and families on a positive school start! I am impressed with all the students' enthusiasm, engagement and positivity towards their learning, following the classroom routine and developing positive connections with their peers.

Literacy

Over the last three weeks, we have learned the sounds for /m/, /s/ and /t/. We have been isolating the beginning sounds in simple words, oral segmenting of simple words and sorting pictures according to the beginning we have learnt. In addition, we are practising the correct letter formation for each corresponding letter. Each day the Preps have been learning to recognise and write their names using the correct position of capital and lowercase letters.

Last week the students were immersed in a world of jungle animals after listening to the story, A Nice Walk in the Jungle. We researched what a jungle looks like, the variety of animals that live there, and explored the meaning of interesting words from the story, such as tender, dare and lumpy. The Preps responded to the story by drawing their favourite jungle animal and writing a sentence starter.

This week's focus story is 'We are Going on a Bear Hunt'. After reading the story and singing the song, the students recalled the characters, the various settings in the story, and the onomatopoeia words describing each scene. These activities allow the students to recall the story's main events verbally, sequence the order of events and learn new vocabulary.

Maths

In Maths, we are learning to describe the location and position of objects. The story Rosie's Walk launched investigations into location and position. The students have engaged in various activities to practise using positional language such as over, through, past, behind, under and behind to describe Rosie's position.

Each day we play different maths games to practice counting forwards and backwards, counting small collections of objects in different ways; we use our superhero eyes to see numbers without counting and identify and order numerals.

Inquiry and Education in Faith

This afternoon the Prep students participated in a liturgy with Father Chinua. The theme of our liturgy was God loves me, I am special. The students have been investigating, sharing and identifying their differences and similarities this term. We have also explored how much God loves us and how He shows us his love. We all agree that God lives in our hearts, regardless of who we are. We are special because God loves us.
