INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY STUDENT EVENT

On Friday 3 March (Week 5), eight SHC students were chosen, along with Mr Goh and Miss Jermy, to attend Emmanuel Catholic College for the inaugural Fremantle Football Club International Women’s Day event. The event celebrated women's achievements and educated and inspired the audience of young female leaders. Speakers included Ange Stanett, Fremantle AFLW player, who spoke about balance and positive support systems, Elise Sutherland, a biomedical scientist who discussed the importance of confidence as a woman in a male dominated field, and Lisa Webb, newly appointed AFLW coach, who spoke about leadership.

Sam Bloom (pictured) concluded the event, and her awe-inspiring nature was clear in her positivity and mindset towards adversity. After a tragic injury she was left unable to walk, in a dark place and without purpose. This mindset shifted when she encountered a magpie chick who stayed with her family. Taking care of the bird gave her a reason to get up every morning and ultimately inspired her to rekindle her old self. She got back in to water sports and fought through adversity to become a world champion para-surfer. Sam was an inspirational speaker. She personified the importance of a healthy mindset and confidence, despite her tremendous challenge.

The event was educational and inspirational. We were left amazed by the achievements of these women and learnt about mindset, confidence and leadership, ultimately making us better young people and leaders within the community.

We would like to thank Mr Goh and Miss Jermy for taking us to the event.
