Grade One

General:

As Term 1 comes to a close, all of the Grade 1 teachers would like to share how impressed we are with the wonderful effort that each student has applied this term. It has been extremely pleasing to see students exercising more independence in entering the classroom and undertaking daily routines. Students have modelled positive classroom behaviours as they continue to collaborate together and establish new friendships with their peers in the classroom and across the cohort. We are wishing all families a happy Easter and hope that you have a wonderful and restful break ahead of you!

Mathematics:

Over the past few weeks, students have continued to familiarise themselves with our number system through the use of an assortment of concrete materials - unifix, bead frames, number charts, number lines and icy pole sticks. These visual and tangible tools have especially guided students during their exploration of addition, subtraction, counting patterns and sharing. Students have also begun to explore our Time concept, through the exploration of days of the week, months of the year and seasons, focusing on ordering them. To finish off our term, we have been revising and consolidating concepts students have engaged with throughout Term 1.

English:

During the second half of Term 1, we began our first writing unit exploring recount writing. The last few weeks have allowed for students to identify the structure of recounts through an assortment of mentor texts, as well as writing their own recounts about special moments and memories using appropriate vocabulary and structured sentences. Over the last two weeks, students have been carefully publishing pieces of work which they were proud of; showcasing their developing ability to follow the writing process. Students have also continued to strengthen their retell skills by reading an assortment of texts and sharing 5 key details to demonstrate their understanding.

Integrated Studies:

Grade 1 students have continued to explore the topic of Community in Integrated Studies. They have looked at people and places in our local community, such as community helpers (police officers, nurses, teachers), local buildings and public parks. In the design process, they brainstormed ways of improving their local community and have placed these ideas into designs. They have been creating their building/space designs using recyclable materials to showcase to their peers in Week 10. Their showcase will display their amazing designs and students can share their community space/building that would improve their local community.
