Learning Centre News...

Learning Centre One

That’s a wrap for Term 2! Thank you for your ongoing contributions to your child/s learning. We would like to say thank you for coming to the learning conversations and taking part in an exciting time where your child/ren could share their achievements and growth throughout their learning at school. We all hope that you have a great 2 week break spending time together as a family.

In Phonics the students have been exploring the digraph sounds ng, al, ee and igh. It has been great seeing the students so engaged in their learning and phonics rotations.

During Literacy the students have been learning how to read for enjoyment and have recapped what concepts about print are. They have also un packed the texts Hairy Bear, Smarty Pants and Grandpa, Grandpa. The students have created puppets to retell the story in relation to the texts being explored. It has been great seeing the students use skills to retell stories that are known to them and use known knowledge to create a flip book with pictures and words to share with their peers.

Throughout Maths the students have been learning about length and how we use informal measurements to measure various items that we find around the learning space. They explored the concept of ‘shorter and longer’ and used streamers to measure how long they are. The students looked at how we ‘estimate’ which is when we take a reasonable guess. The students looked at comparing different items that are longer and shorter.

Religion has been exciting the last few weeks as the students have created their own prayers and explored the different people we pray to and for. We have been looking at prayers of intention and how these prayers are where we pray for something in particular. Students recorded themselves saying their prayers and shared this with their learning group and teacher.

Some friendly reminders:

  • Readers - Please ensure that book bags are bought back on a Monday (first day of Term 3) and they will be returned on Tuesday with a new book.
  • Students require their iPads for learning. Please ensure that they’re charged and brought to school each day.
  • Term 3 commences 10th July, 2023

Tips for reading at home:

  • Talk about what is happening in the pictures in the book before reading
  • Discuss words that your child is unsure about
  • Make predictions about what the story might be about. What do you think will happen? What will happen next?
  • Start at the end of the book. How do you think the story got to this point?
  • Talk about what they’ve learned from reading the text

We hope you all have a fantastic holiday, stay warm and enjoy the time with your families. We look forward to seeing you in Term 3!

Prep Team - Amanda, Donna, Imogen, Kiah, Mary, Sam & Tina.

LITERACY

As the term has come to an end, so has the sharing of some very special novels and picture storybooks in our reading lessons. In response to the novels that have been shared, students have had a go at redesigning the front covers of these books. Scott's class group (and LSO Anna) have been reading Morris Gleitzman's 'Once' and Lisa's class have enjoyed listening to Tim Winton's 'Blueback'. Scott has also been sharing the story 'Cicada' by Shaun Tan with his students, some of whom have responded to the book in a very creative way.

MATHS

Over the last few weeks, the focus in maths for the 5/6 students has been multiplication and division. The children have been practising their times tables and we encourage them to continue to do so over the holidays. In class, we have been working with a variety of strategies to solve number equations and also worded problems. Students have been learning to use short division to find the answers to equations that involve remainders, showing these as whole numbers and decimals.

RELIGION

As some of the Year 6 students prepare to make their Confirmation next term, the senior students have been exploring the connections to the Sacrament of Baptism. After hearing the scripture story of Jesus' baptism, students were tasked with creating an artistic representation of this story.

Also during Religion lessons, students have been learning about the lives of saints. For their Confirmation name, the Year 6 students will be asked to choose the name of a saint who modelled the way of being that they feel most connected to. Below are some photos of the posters they created after researching the lives of different saints.

Literacy

Over the last few weeks in LC4 we have been looking at Poetry in Literacy. In reading we enjoyed exploring Revolting rhymes by Roahl Dahl and focused on the poems of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf, Three little pigs and Goldilocks and the three bears, week looked at different poetic devices such as rhyme, smilies and metaphor as well as visualising what was happening in the poems.

In writing we looked and wrote a number of different poems such as rhyming poems, shape poems, Alliteration and a Haiku. A Haiku is 5, 7, 5 so that means you need to have a sentence that is 5 syllables, a sentence that  has  7 syllables and another sentence that is 5 syllables,.This is the poetry unit all the students have really enjoyed creating different poems and being more creative with their writing.

Maths

For the past few weeks, in LC4 students have been looking at Location and Number Patterns for Maths. Inj  Location, The students made treasure maps with a key and coordinates, as well as grid positions. The students also explored BOLTS and created grid coordinates when giving directions or locating objects on a map.

In  Number Patterns, students created different number patterns on 120 charts. Theys  mastered a number of online maths games and BUZZ! They also learned how to skip count from other numbers other than 0. We learned a new skip counting game where you can reverse it back to the player before you.

We have been working on our Google websites this term. In our website as part of our digi tech unit, we learnt how to use google drawing to create a flow chart. We also learnt how to use Google sheets, we used our data from maths to create tables and charts. We added all of this plus some slideshows into our In our school website we have different pages such as, flowchart, data, rubric, system, home page, google apps.

We applied our knowledge from our school website to create our own website. For our own website, some people did the topic of shows, movies, mythical creatures, animals, seasons or soccer\football.
