Sports Report
Inter-School Sport
Term 2 was a big one for inter-school sport at Patterson River Secondary College. We had many teams competing across all year levels in AFL, netball, badminton, soccer and basketball. Well done to all of the students who represented the school and a big thank you to the teachers who gave up their time to train and coach these teams.
A special mention must go the to the Year 7 Girls netball team coached by Miss Riddle. They won the NPD title and will have the opportunity to compete again at the SMR Championships in Term 3. Players included Renny Mcgirr, Mali Roberts, Mia Skomrlj, Lucy Malcomson, Holly Russell Vasilopoulos, Fern Doherty, Lucy Munro, Lily Dougherty, Molly Shadbolt & Mia Johnston.
Well done and good luck to this great team!
Cross Country
Three rounds of Cross Country were held in Term 2 including the school trials, the NPD Championships and the SMR Championships. Patterson River had another successful year with many runners qualifying and progressing through each stage of competition. A special mention to our five runners who qualified for the State Championships in Term 3. They are Shannon Delaney, Lochie Fulton, Alana Tullberg, Sarah Littler & Lucy Malcomson. Well done and good luck to these legends!
Intermediate Baseball Southern Zone Final
The team headed out to Cheltenham Baseball Club for the Zone Finals.
The draw was a bit compromised as a school didn’t turn up so effectively the 2 wining teams after the first round made it to the final.
Game 1
PRSC v McKinnon SC
PRSC 6 -3 Win
Joel Bouker pitched two perfect innings and kept McKinnon scoreless.
Joel worked with Fletcher Leonard Scott who was the catcher for the day. Support from the infield of Xavier Martine at first base, Kaleb Morrison at second, Billy Thomson at short stop and Tom Murphy at third base.
A couple of good plays and McKinnon kept scoreless in two innings.
Some solid batting from all players, hits or walks all the way down the list and PRSC scored 5 in the first innings. A great bunt from Fletcher set the tone for players willing to sacrifice their time at bat to get runners in scoring position.
In the last innings Oliver Robinson took the mound and pitched a great innings. It always hard to come in and the McKinnon team had little option but to “swing the bat”.
The outfield supported the pitcher by keeping moving and ready for the hits to come. Riley McGennisken, Phoenix Simpfendorfer and Jack Pierce all played the part. A great catch by Tom M and fielding kept the damage to 3 runs.
Game 2
PRSC v Frankston HS
Curiously we were against the team we beat in the group finals Frankston HS. They went through as “lucky losers” as another team pulled out. They made the most of it in the first innings and scored 4 runs.
We posted a single run and played catch up for most of the game.
The outfield were tested and Ned Dowling, Tom Patterson worked with the infield to restrict the damage.
In the third innings we had 1 out and with runners in scoring position, 2nd and 3Rd base, Billy T smashed a ball past the pitcher but in a freak accident it hit the umpire. In all my years of baseball playing and coaching never seen it happen.
The umpire correctly called “dead ball” however the result was the two runners missed out on scoring the runs and it loaded the bases with PRSC runners.
The game of catch up continued into the innings and we fell short by 1 run to force the game into the final innings.
FHS def PRSC 6-4
Some highlights of the day included a bomb from Joel and Oliver, Joel’s pitching effort, Fletcher behind the plate as catcher and some courageous base running from Jack Pierce! Lots of hustle and stolen bases always makes the game more exciting.
Thanks to all the players who showed great spirit and support for each other. Thanks to Ned and Tom P for taking on the scoring job in the first game.
A great day on the diamond and all players should be proud of their efforts.
