Ulysses Community Report

A message from the Ulysses Team

Well done to all of the Ulysses students on an amazing Term 2 so far! Thanks to all of the parents and guardians who attended our Information night in May.

We would like to give a big congratulations to all of the Year 3 students who completed their NAPLAN tests. A big achievement.

We are really proud of all of the hard work the Year 3s and 4s have completed this Term.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

In the Ulysses community, students have been learning about the four zones of regulation. The zones represent emotions that we might be feeling. They are colour coded into green, yellow, blue and red zones. Students are learning to identify what zone they might be in and the strategies they can use to regulate their emotions to come back into the green zone.

Each student in the Ulysses community has a school diary where they have been reflecting on their day by answering a question or completing an activity that takes around 2-5 minutes to complete. Students are practicing gratitude, empathy and mindfulness in their diary created by The Resilience Project.

In April, students learnt the meaning of ANZAC day and why it is celebrated as a national day of remembrance for Australians and New Zealanders. Classes shared prior knowledge and built their understandings of the importance of remembering the sacrifices that our soldiers made for us. Students worked together to create a wreath in remembrance that was presented at the whole school assembly.

Mother’s Day is an annual reminder to say thanks to the mums and other special female carers in our lives! Ulysses students expressed why they appreciate their mums/carers and shared with others about what they could do to show their appreciation. Students completed activities such as making cards and creating flowers to surprise their mums/carers with.

Numeracy

In the Ulysses community in term 2, student have been learning about additive thinking. Keywords like sum, add, combine and more than indicate addition. Keywords like minus, difference, fewer, and take away indicate subtraction. The Ulysses students have looked for verbal clues when solving worded problems. Students look out for these words and have implemented many different strategies to solve the problem.

These strategies include: Jump, split, partitioning, column, algorithm, count on count back and compensation strategies.

Literacy

In Literacy, the Ulysses community is working on planning, drafting, editing and publishing a persuasive piece of writing. Students are brainstorming and creating sizzling starters and WOW words to engage the reader. We have also been looking at examples of persuasive writing pieces to look at and identify the emotive language present in the writing piece.

Inquiry

Throughout Inquiry we have been looking at our Topic: ‘Are We Standing Still on Earth’. Students have been learning about and researching the topics: The Sun, Earth and Moon. We have been looking at ideas such as the Earth’s rotation which affects the Day/Night Cycle and the Seasons, the Phases of the Moon and modelling the relative sizes of the Moon, Sun and Earth.

Students created a Sun and Moon Artwork, using cool and warm colours to contrast the different objects.
