CONGRATULATIONS TO YEAR 12 LANGUAGE STUDENTS

Oral Examinations for Languages started this week and I would like to congratulate all those students who have already completed their exams. To all other students who have still got this challenging performance ahead of themselves, best of luck, stay calm and focused, I am sure you will do your best!

I would like to thank the Year 12 teachers for working with students throughout the holidays, our French and German assistants Ms Acar, Mme Protat and Mlle Barthelemy who supported our students throughout the year, and a special thank you to Mme Reid, Mme Lynd and Mme Jimenez for conducting French Practice Examinations in preparation for the final Oral Examination.

BERTHE MOUCHETTE COMPETITION 2021

Once again, our French students from Year 9 to 12 had the opportunity to compete in the Alliance Francaise’s Berthe Mouchette competition. This competition allows our students to develop their oral skills and, for the senior students, their writing as well.

Congratulations to Hugo TRAN who won the Prix Hors-Categorie Year 11 oral award, which is the prize for native speakers.

Undertaking the orals during Covid is quite a challenge - some classes were able to record themselves at school, others over Google meets; finals were online. The hope is that next year there might be a return to a more usual process. We encourage all students to avail themselves of this exciting opportunity every year.

GERMAN YEAR 7 STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THE AGTV POETRY COMPETITION 2021

The Poetry Competition, run by the Association of German Teachers of Victoria, is an annual event with a long-standing tradition to celebrate the German language. Learners of German from all over Victoria are participating in the unique event. This rewarding experience gives our students a glimpse of German literature and its importance to German culture.

For the second year in a row, the event has been run remotely. Our students learned off by heart a poem and produced a recording of themselves reciting it. The recordings by the strongest candidates were forwarded to a panel of judges from the AGTV.

The attached sample recordings by Adam Short (Year 7C), Khushi Agarwal (Year 7E) and Jonty Litwinow (Year 7I) showcase how our Year 7s rise to the challenge.

Khushi Agarwal (Year 7E)

Jonty Litwinow (Year 7I)

The learning and reciting of a poem requires enthusiasm, effort and commitment. Our students listened to recordings of the poems in class and at home, and learned verses and stanzas gradually, whilst perfecting expression, intonation and pace. In the poems, our students recognised terms and phrases they had already learned in class, which helped them memorise them, and at the same time enjoy and appreciate them.

Thank you Year 7s for committing wholeheartedly to whatever you are doing. We appreciate your diligent efforts and how much time you have taken to do this so well!

ENTERPRISE GERMAN / UNTERNEHMEN DEUTSCH

The Year 10 German class is nearing the end of the Unternehmen Deutsch project, run each year by the Goethe Institut Sydney. Student learners of German in several Australian states and from regional and metropolitan areas are taking part and have already uploaded their work for the first two modules.

For module #2 students chose a company from a German-speaking country that trades with Australia, or an Australian company with close ties to a German-speaking country. Students conducted an online interview with a representative of their chosen company. Our McKinnon class consists of a group that chose to work with Leica Camera; a group that is working with BRITA, the company that manufactures a range of water filters; a group that is working with BayWa r.e., a company in the renewable energy field; and a group that is working with Suona Voce, a small company that promotes cooperative ventures between German musicians and Australian musicians.

Our students are completing module #3, where they come up with a business idea for a product or service that the company could consider, along with advertising ideas.

Students describe and explain their ideas in presentations and videos in written and spoken German. The awards ceremony takes place online on Thursday 28 October. We congratulate our students for their creativity and their cooperation and teamwork, particularly in the remote-learning environment.
