Applied Learning

Miss Pappin, Mrs Blue, Mrs Woodland and Mr Fabila would like to congratulate Year 7 and Year 8. This has been a massive semester, and they’ve taken on every challenge we have asked of them. Working in groups is never easy, we know that, but we are seeing our students step up and try new things every day. Congratulations, we look forward to our next project together!

Year 8

This term, Year 8 Applied Learning students have been exploring how a culture can communicate the values and beliefs specific to their culture. In this project, we have focused on Australia’s First Nation. Students have researched the ways information can be communicated, such as Dreamtime stories, Songlines, art, music and verbal language. This has helped them to build their understanding of the First Nations culture.

For our product, students have created a ‘Hello Tucker’ box. This food box is modeled off Hello Fresh, reinventing a traditional recipe using native Australian herbs. Each box comes with a culture card, where students are able to explain the significance of their work.

Our classrooms have been an array of paint, tea bag making, cooking and discussion as we create our own Hello Tucker boxes. This investigation was extended by a visit to Walkabout Wildlife park where students were able to learn more about Australian animals and bush medicine.

In Term 3, we look forward to seeing all of Year 8 showcase their work during the Cooinda Cultural Program. If any members of the community would like an invitation to this event, please contact Michelle Woodland. We thank Lisa Selsby for inviting us in to share our project with Cooinda.

Year 7

The year 7 Applied Learning classes have been looking at how we can make a change in society using the power of film. In teams of 3-5 we have created some short films to spark change in the world where it’s really needed.

Our question that is the basis of this project is: "As filmmakers, how can we be a catalyst for social change?"

We have pondered this question and came up with many different topics and ideas that are included in our own film shorts.

The experience of working with other students in my class, on a project that defends something I believe in, was awesome. We shared similar ideas and opinions, and even though I was away for most of the creative process, I still found the experience quite memorable.

We are having an audience of other students and teachers for our film premiere. I guess that with the views of other people, the messages that we are trying to spread will be shared even farther and that by itself will have a massive impact.

I really loved doing this project and I’d definitely recommend it to other schools and classes as it builds teamwork skills, creative thinking, cognitive skills and individuality - Amelia, 7Y
