Year Advisers Reports -

     Years 8, 10 & 12

YEAR 8

Year 8 have had a very busy term in and outside the classroom. Outside the classroom students started the term with the Cross Country and Athletics Carnival. Well Done to everyone who participated, and a huge congratulations to our Age Champions – Cordell Shenje and Eric Chen.

Our next big event was our long awaited “Year 7” camp that due to Covid-19 restrictions turn into our “Year 8” Camp, it was fantastic to see Year 8 enjoy themselves, trying activities they would not normally do and take away so many memories. I am sure in years to come will we still be talking about some of the funnier memories. I know I have my personal highlights!

In the last couple of weeks, Year 8 have had, an excursion to the Australian Walkabout Wildlife Park, High Resolves Workshop and a Welfare/Careers Day. All these events help students with their studies and wellbeing.

During this term we have also had some students complete in extra events for school including many sporting events and well done to Courtney Cottle for making the schools debating team. A big congratulations to Ethan McKaig and Lex Jephtha for performing at the OnTrack Performance night, and well done to Dorion McCulloch for helping with lighting and sound on the night.

I know many students compete in sporting and a of range activities outside school, I love hearing about your successes and the experiences you gain from these. Recently, one our students, Caleb Abbott, successfully completed in a Cycling Event with Central Coast Cycling Club and is off to the next round – best of luck Caleb!

Within the classroom students have been working very hard, as I saw when reading through their reports. Term 2 is a very busy term with many assessments due and reports at the end. Students are to be congratulated on their great results! Students are encouraged to remember to take on board all their teachers suggestions to help with the second part of the year.

Wishing all of Year 8 and their families, a wonderful holiday, stay safe and looking forward to another exciting term!

YEAR 10

And just like that, Term 2 has come to an end! Well done to the fabulous Year 10 for their commitment and ongoing efforts in what has been an incredibly busy term. Thank you to all of our Year 10 families for attending both of our Senior Pathways evenings in the school hall. Your support in joining our students as they begin to undertake their senior studies is always appreciated. It was great to see such a great turnout of families and this was an excellent opportunity to answer any questions related to the process. Year 10 have until the end of Week 9 to finalise their subject selections. Don’t forget that your first day of school for Term 3 will be your Stage 6 Interview. Please arrive to school at your allocated time in smart attire (as if you were attending a real job interview). I am really looking forward to this experience with Year 10!

Congratulations to our HKHS athletes who put on a magnificent performance at the annual Athletics Carnival held at Mingara earlier in the term. Even in the pouring rain our students still excelled both on and off the track. Particular shout out to the Year 10 boys discus event (which just happened to begin just as the monsoonal rain began to pour down) where the students banded together in an attempt to keep my scoresheet from turning into paper mache, it still turned into mush but their efforts were appreciated!

Our wonderful CAPA students showcased their abundance of talent this term at the OnTrack held at The Entertainment Grounds. These students did themselves proud and the performances were amazing! We have some serious talent on our hands in Year 10, well done to all involved.

Last week I was lucky enough to accompany 100 Year 10 students to the Stand Tall event at the ICC in Darling Harbour. We heard some incredible speeches from some inspirational Australians including 2016 Melbourne Cup winner, Michelle Payne. Well done to the students who attended on their exemplary behaviour. We even managed to score ourselves a starring role in the filming on the day so keep an eye out for the final video. Thanks to all the staff who attended and to our parents and carers for assisting us in getting their children to Gosford train station at 6:30am… Top effort!

Finally, I’d like to wish Year 10 and their families a relaxing and safe school holidays. See you all again in two weeks where no doubt we’ll hit the ground running again!

Year 12

The finish line is rapidly approaching for Year 12. Term 2 has been incredibly busy completing tasks, projects, drama performances, artworks, musical performances and much more. I am very proud of how well they have worked and their outstanding achievements. Many of the students have taken advantage of the mentoring program provided by their teachers which has assisted them in their planning, organising and general coping skills! I hope the students show their appreciation for staff who have spent their time assisting the students.

As the school captains and prefects come to the end of their reign I would like to thank them for the outstanding work they have done in leading the student body and representing Year 12 in particular. Brandon, Imogen, Clare, Caitlyn, Bridie, Eloise and Charlotte have been amazing student leaders and will be a hard act to follow.

At weekly assemblies I have been reminding the students of the importance of checking their school email. There is a lot of vital information coming through from NESA as well as career and training information from Mrs Cortaville-Smith. Some extra reminders might come in handy!

The Trial HSC exams will be held during Weeks 4 and 5, Term 3. It is suggested that students dedicate themselves in the upcoming holidays to preparing for these exams. They will be crucial not only to their school mark, which makes up 50% of their HSC mark, but also to their final rank. Preparation of notes and summaries will be necessary also for their final HSC exam so the more they do now the easier the task will be later.

There will be information notes coming out in Term 3 outlining procedures for graduation, course sign-out, textbook returns and purchasing of Formal tickets. Hopefully all of this goes to plan without any interruptions.

Any issues or concerns please contact me via the school office.
