HSIE & Language

Term Two is traditionally been a busy time for students and teachers and this has especially been the case for those of us connected to the HSIE Faculty. Year 7 students have completed comprehensive research on the suburb in which they live and completed fieldwork in the Gosford CBD. Students completed an urban belt transect of Mann Street, observations and field sketches at Gosford Station and Leagues Club Park/Playground. Huge thanks to Mr Newton, Mrs Travica and Mrs Le Page who accompanied students.

Year 8 students have completed their study of Geography in Semester One. They have completed some outstanding work in Water in the World and Interconnections. Teachers were very impressed with students’ extended responses that reflected on personal and global interconnections. From Term 3, student embark on their study of Medieval Europe, The Black Death and Polynesian Expansion in the Pacific.

Year 9 students have commenced their study of Australians at War and HKHS is pleased to announce that WW I – Living History will be visiting to help as celebrate History Week in September. This will be a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their understanding of Australia’s military history from the Boer War to modern peace keeping in the 21st Century.

Year 10 students completed their mandatory fieldwork at Terrigal Beach on Friday 11 June. Students spent the day engaged in practical fieldwork tasks designed to enhance their understanding of coastal environments. A huge thanks to Miss McLennan for coordinating the day, as well as Mr Newton, Mrs Kostalas, Mr Herring, Mrs Travica and Mrs Le Page for providing their expertise on the day.

Congratulations to our Year 11 Mock Trial Team for another success in the Law Society’s 2021 Competition. Our team had a comprehensive win over St Edwards in Round Three. The team is busily preparing for their next round against Lake Munmorah High School.

Congratulations to Year 11 Ancient and Modern History students for successfully completing the Historical Investigation component of their course in Term Two. This involves independent research, the development of logs as a reflection tool and a presentation to the cohort. Mr Macdonald, Mrs Le Page and Mrs Mitchell have been truly impressed with students’ efforts and the quality of their research this year.

Year 12 students across HSIE subjects should be busily preparing for Trial HSC Exams in Term Three. It is vital that students are completing work set by their teachers over the holiday break, develop topic summaries and complete practice questions

Congratulations to students across the junior and senior school who participated in the Australian Geography Competition this year.  Well done to Lily Arendse (Year 8), Jack North (Year 11) and Jake Harrison (Year 12) on receiving High Distinctions in this prestigious competition.
