Debating News

In the week of the 16th August, students from Years 7-11 competed in the final rounds of the Debaters Association of Victoria competition.  They were fine ambassadors of the School and achieved the following results:

C Grade – Year 7 team – William Slow, Vivek Vattakatuchery and Ashan Dhanapala lost their prepared debate ‘That we support mandatory national service’  and won the secret topic – ‘That all Australians should be given access to free Wifi in their homes’.  This was a great achievement, as the boys were competing against a Year Nine team and had only debated twice before.  Well done!

C Grade – Year 9 team – Jenna Ackland, Bailey Dolan and Chloe Peter – This team debated the same topics and won both debates.  Jenna Ackland was awarded Best Speaker both times.  It was  Chloe’s first debate – so well done team, great effort!

VCE Grade – Years 10/11 team – Will Hamilton, Remus Brasier and Sophie Mayes won their prepared debate ‘That we regret the rise of cancel culture’.  Remus was awarded Best Speaker.

VCE Grade – Year 10 team – Remus Brasier, Aksharan Shobanan and Viran Dhanapala won their secret topic debate – ‘That Australian political party leaders should be elected by the public’. Remus was awarded Best Speaker.

VCE Grade – Year 10/11 team – William Hamilton, Sophie Mayes and Elise Richards also won their secret debate on the same topic.  Will was awarded Best Speaker.

Both VCE teams then progressed to the playoffs which were held on the 30th August.

The two A Grade teams debated in a Play-Off round in the Debaters Association of Victoria competition.  The secret topic was released an hour before the debate  - ‘That the west should attempt to overthrow Vladamir Putin.’  Both teams debated the negative.

Remus Brasier, Aksharan Shobanan and Viran Dhanapala unfortunately lost their debate by 2 points.

Will Hamilton, Sophie Mayes and Zoe Cuthbertson won their debate and will progress to the Octo-finals.  Zoe was awarded Best Speaker.
