The Challenges of Learning in Lockdown

Remote learning has its challenges and is definitely not the same as being in our school environment.  Simply from not being able to physically be in class having a face-to-face discussion with your teacher, to being motivated to do classwork.

It is evident that there is more enjoyment and interaction in learning at school rather than behind a screen. Remote learning had also made us feel as if we haven’t had a break from school simply since we have school, as well as free time, in our rooms, which makes it more difficult for us to leave our learning mindset at the end of the day and then make room for personal time in the same space.

Learning behind a screen is not the same as it makes me, and my fellow boarders, feel more challenged to understand our teachers through a screen, than having a face-to-face communication with them in class. Also, settling with remote learning in the Boarding House is at times distracting with having friends living with you and, of course, having YouTube only one click away.

However, despite all the inconvenience, learning within the Boarding House during lockdown has not been the end of the world, as I have not entirely lost all of my friends. Remote learning has made it more convenient to learn as we get more time to complete our work during class times and it is less exhausting with more time to sleep-in before class starts.

Having Lochie around the Boarding House has also been one of our highlights in remote learning as we have more time to play with him and go on walks which truly puts a smile on all of our faces. We are so grateful for this wonderful Year 12 gift to the College. Furthermore, the food in boarding during lockdown has also been a highlight since remote learning commenced this week. We have had a variety of hot meals for lunch and some pretty tasty morning and afternoon teas which has made all the boarders very happy.

To conclude, the lockdown has truly opened each of our boarders’ eyes to see how grateful we are to have the opportunity to learn in a school environment surrounded by good friends and excellent teachers. Thank you!
