Wear it Purple Day
Friday 27 August
Last Friday (27 August), students and staff were invited to wear purple or use a Wear it Purple themed Teams background in support of Wear it Purple Day.
Wear it Purple Day is about showing LGBTQ+ young people that they have the right to be proud of who they are. It is about creating safe spaces in schools, universities, workplaces and public spaces to show LGBTQ+ young people that they are seen and supported. Young LGBTQ+ people face fear of rejection, discrimination and bullying, and are more likely to experience depression and anxiety as a result. Showing support for young people who identify as LGBTQI+ is incredibly helpful. Research shows that small but consistent efforts of allyship make a significant difference in their lives and to their wellbeing.
This year’s theme is 'Start the conversation… keep it going'. This theme focuses on the important and necessary conversations we have in our daily life; particularly those that centre around sexual orientation and gender identity.
On Wear it Purple Day, rainbow community members and allies share their stories to gently educate on LGBTQ+ issues, to start these conversation and continue them every day.
