You Are What You Eat

Wear it Purple Day Task
To celebrate Wear it Purple Day, students in 'You Are What You Eat' were given the opportunity to plan and create a purple themed dish. The design brief only included one rule: the dish must be purple. Students took to the challenge incredibly, coming up with a range of different recipes they could create. It was amazing to see all the students get so involved in the task and create incredible posters/meals to help spread awareness and celebrate a great day!

Oz Harvest Webinar and Cooking Challenge
Celebrating Science Week, and the theme of 'Food: Different by Design', we were inspired by the United Nations International Year of Fruits and Vegetables and the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development.
The specialisms ‘You Are What You Eat’ and ‘Sustainable Food Solutions’ had the opportunity to attend a webinar held by Oz Harvests founder, Ronni Kahn. Food waste is a global issue and a major contributor to climate change. One third of all food produced is wasted each year. On average, Australians waste 298kg of food each year. That is the same weight as six adult kangaroos. Students heard about the impact of food waste on climate change and how they can design their food differently to create a sustainable future.
One way to reduce food waste is to look through your fridge and pantry before going grocery shopping. It is important to use the food we currently have available to us to avoid unnecessary food waste. It will help save money and our environment. The Year 9/10 cooking specialisms participated in a remote cooking lesson called the 1,2,3,4 challenge. Students designed a savory or sweet dish that included ten ingredients from the following categories.
- 1 x food from a can
- 2 x dairy items (or dairy alternatives)
- 3 x vegetables or fruits
- 4 x pantry staples
This challenge required students to think creatively about how they could incorporate each of the ingredients to create a tasty dish and they did a wonderful job!
