From the Chaplain

Over the last three weeks the Year Three students had been getting ready for a chapel service, with the theme of ‘God is always with us.’  They had been looking at Psalm 23 and looked at Uncle Rev Ron Williams’ ‘Psalm 23 – Aboriginal Style’ who relates God to looking after us like a daddy emu looks after his chicks (this was acted out in chapel).  The students then thought of who they could relate God to and then wrote their own Psalm 23 poem.  Examples included, ‘The Rooster’, ‘My swimming coach’, ‘My vet’ and ‘My Mum and Dad.’

The Year Nine students have had Christian Values lessons that relate to the ‘You Can Do It!’ program. They have looked at ‘Task Analysis’ and ‘Smart Goals.’ They learned that when thinking about the future it is important to ask God for direction.  They coloured in a quote about knowing which path to take. A wise woman once told me: When it is of God it comes with confirmation and peace.  But when it is not of God, it comes with hesitation, frustration and confusion.

The Year Twelve students have been looking at the Alpha series. This is a Christian based program that encourages students to engage in conversation about life, faith and God. In each session we watch a video and students have time to reflect on three questions they are asked.  Examples include:

  • Why do you think Jesus is so famous?
  • What makes you happy?
  • How do you see sin in the world?
  • In the image of the pool, the water represents a relationship with God.  Which character do you identify with the most?

Have a look at the image for yourself, where are you on here?  Some examples of what the characters mean:

  • Woman in doorway: is interested in God but allowed herself to get distracted
  • Man reading newspaper: used to have a relationship with God, but is focused on all the bad things that happen and so is possibly angry with God and is ignoring him.
  • Muscle man: has no interest in God; can’t see or worship anyone but himself.
  • Man putting his foot into the pool: wants to have a relationship with God but is scared of what it means.
  • Woman in a towel : had a relationship with God but something happened, got scared and decided to get away from God.
  • Handstander: is really enjoying his relationship with God and so is trying to be fully immersed in him.
