Book Week

Each year, Book Week is celebrated throughout schools and public libraries across Australia. This week we have highlighted our incredible authors and illustrators, bringing light to the magic that reading brings.

This year, the Children’s Book Council of Australia has chosen the theme ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’ aiming to spark curiosity.

Well done to all Junior School students who dressed up connecting to the theme.

This week has been coordinated by Ms Elinor Couper, Head of Library Services. May we all continue to promote the love of reading.

Career Education

Moving with the times in education is important for school leaders in Australia and in doing this we must navigate our way through myths, rumours and trends.  Recently, we have seen many external changes to the education landscape with changes to student pathways in VET, ATAR and General courses. In responding to these changes that I feel GSG is well placed in determining a student’s pathway for success.

Last Friday, Year Nine students, and later parents, were involved in discussing career pathways, lead by Curtin AHEAD facilitators. In many respects this session served to dispel a number of myths, address rumours about future options and look at current trends.  Our new initiative to bring Career Education into the Middle School is important as providing opportunities for broadening understanding and being aware of change is necessary in times of educational change.

Albany’s Big Sleepout

Chloe Trend (Head Girl) and Elijah Wesley (Head Boy) will brave the chilly winter conditions by sleeping out at the Albany Showgrounds this Saturday to raise money for the homeless. At a recent student assembly, Elijah spoke about homelessness:  With a winter as wet and cold as this year, it’s hard to imagine what it would be like to be out exposed to the elements every night without the luxuries of heaters and shelter. I look forward sharing with you my experience and the stories that come from these amazingly resilient people.
