The Peppercorns 10s & 11s

The Peppercorns started the term by exploring poetry as part of our inquiry into identity and self. We analysed a variety of poems, discussing theme, mood, language, structure and context. In response to our inquiry, the children used different forms of poetry to create a series of autobiographical poems. The children experimented with different types of figurative language to communicate the symbolism and theme of their poems.

We investigated what makes us unique and the similarities that we share with others through the conceptual lenses: From and Connection. Some children responded by recreating past photos and others sketched an Identity Map as a visual representation. This sparked much discussion around personal change, and how our uniqueness and similarities connect and influence our class community. Inspired by our discussions and discoveries, the children planned, organised and created a personal project which included writing an autobiographical poem and a tangible piece/artifact.

Universe UoI: We have also begun our Unit of Inquiry around the exploration of our universe, discoveries and new understandings. Beginning with earth, the sun and the moon, the children theorised how day and night occurred. They created diagrams or live presentations to explain their theories. Through rich discussion and brainstorming, the children formulated questions that could act as a starting point for their research about the universe such as: What is the moon made out of? Why do stars die? What would happen if the sun disappeared for 24 hours? and Why is Pluto not a true planet?

From their questions, the children then researched, planned, drafted, edited and published their information report for their chosen topic. They synchronised their research and discussion points to demonstrate their understanding of the interconnectedness of the universe or different aspects of our solar system.
