Foundation

It has been another busy week of Remote Learning in Foundation. As we near the end of term, we are still continuing to share our thinking and discoveries with one another and find out about different things through our online Google Meets. Everyone is continuing to display all their skills as amazing communicators, collaborators, researchers, thinkers, e-learners and self-managers.

As readers, we are engaging with different fiction and non-fiction texts in our whole class meets and in small, targeted focus groups. As thinkers, we are applying all of our new letter sound knowledge about initial sounds, blends, digraphs and word endings to help us decode different words. We are practising our fluency and expression, and continuing to make meaning of what we are reading by identifying key events and ideas and making connections. As mathematicians, we explored the concept of Chance and Probability. We unpacked the words will, won’t, might, possible and impossible and looked at lots of different scenarios, events, books, nursery rhymes and fairytales. As thinkers, we classified them as possible or impossible, and justified our thinking by explaining why. We had time and opportunity to come up with our own events and scenarios that ‘will happen’, ‘might happen’ and ‘won’t happen’. We also played different card and dice games as we investigated the chance and likelihood of getting different colours and numbers. Over the next two weeks, we will consolidate all of our mathematical thinking about addition, subtraction, location and chance.

As inquirers, we hadtime and opportunity to sort out all of our discoveries about the past from the stories that we shared with each other about our grandparents. We identified the similarities and differences between the way they lived and how we live today. As thinkers, we shared some of the wonderings and questions we still have about the past. Many of us are curious about what school was like many years ago and as communicators, shared our thinking about how we can find out about our wonderings. As researchers, we will look at pictures, watch videos and interview other people to gather more information.

On Friday, as members of a faith community, we all attended Mass with Father via Facebook Live in celebration of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, followed by our usual Fun Friday. This week, we celebrated Father’s Day a little early as we engaged in various learning tasks and activities for or with our dad, grandfather or special person. We drew and painted portraits, wrote poems, made beautiful cards and voucher books, decorated t-shirts, baked Dad’s favourite treats and went on a Father’s Day scavenger hunt. We had so much fun and couldn’t wait to share our creations with everyone.

Once again, we thank you for your continued support during this challenging time. We hope all the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers and other special people had a wonderful Father’s Day over the weekend.

As curious inquiriers, we were fortunate enough to engage in learning from Wanyara, an Indigenous Australian company who helps young learners understand and embrace the perspectives of Indigenous Australians. This week we explored our story by creating a story map of symbols that represent the important things in our life. The symbols in the centre of the map are the most important to us. Have a look at our stories below and see if you can see what is most important to us!

We can’t believe how fast this term has gone! Thank you for your ongoing support and we look forward to another week of engaging learning!

Kind regards,

Belinda Filippone, Maria Delaney and Stefanie Carriera

Year 3/4

Last Thursday evening we had a great aatendance for our Reconciliation Faith Family Workshop with Michelle Linossiuer.  Michelle led students and families through the activities to help us all gain a clearer insight into what it means to reconcile ourselves within our faith and within our family.  The actual date for the Sacrament is still to be confirmed. As  soon as we have more information we will  forward to families.

It is getting closer to Christmas and one sign of this is the opportunity to design a Christmas card for our local Member of Parliament, Lizzy Blandthorn.  Children have been provided with a template to enter the competition where the winning design will feature on Lizzy Blandthorn’s christmas card.  The closing date is October 15th by which entries need to be returned to school.  There are 3 prizes to be won and each entry receives a certificate of appreciation.

In Literacy students are continuing to look at the structures of cause and effect in texts read. They are also writing a report on an animal of their choice.

In Mathematics we are investigating coordinates used in maps and on grids as well as reading and following written directions using the language of location.

Continue to follow the updates on the Skoolbag app to keep up with other whole school events and activities.

Year 5/6

The Year 5/6 students continued to demonstrate their ability to self-manage their daily timetables and apply themselves to their learning. Congratulations on another productive week of Remote Learning!

Last Monday, the students and teachers had the opportunity to meet and listen to author Adrian Beck. Not only did Adrian speak about the many books he has published, he also gave us an insight into himself as an author. He shared the three M’s you can use to generate writing ideas and three P’s you need to build your story. The students will be encouraged to try out these writing strategies when planning and drafting their own pieces of writing. We thank Adrian for his engaging and informative presentation.

Ask your child to explain Adrian Beck’s writing strategies. (Listed below).

Three  M’s to generate writing ideas:

Mission Impossible

Me, Me, Me

Mash up

Three  P’s to build a story:

People

Place

Plot

Everyone is continuing to read and enjoy the novel ‘39 Clues’. The book features 14-year-old Amy Cahill and her younger brother Dan on a quest to discover the secret behind their family's power. The students are making connections with the text, themselves and the world. In the latest chapter, we were excited as the characters began their  journey and quest to discover the treasure. We learnt that the main characters were related to famous historical figures, including Harry Houdini, Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. We all look forward to the next exciting chapter!

In Religion, the students have been researching a Saint of their choice. This is particularly important for the Year 6 Confirmation candidates, as they come to learn about the Saint whose name they have chosen to take in Confirmation. A focus has been on identifying how their Saint exhibited the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit throughout their life.

Finally, Happy Father’s Day to our Dads/special males in our lives. We hope you had a lovely day yesterday. Here are some examples of the creative limericks that our students wrote about their Dads.

There was once a very kind dad

He was a bit annoying just like an ad

He had a face like a pug

He would always give you a huge hug

He would always give you a huge hug

Nicholas  (5/6CF)

Dear Dad,

Not once have you been bad

I can’t wait to give you your gifts

As I hope that it will lift your mood

Like, come on Dude!

It’s a very special day,

In its own special way,

I love you Dad, and I am very glad

That I have a Dad like you.

Eva P (5/6VC)

Happy Father's Day

Thank you for teaching me everything I need in life or essay

Remember to keep up the bad dad jokes

You're also getting a bit chunky, maybe stay off the food and start drinking those yolks

Lachlan (5/6VC)

There once was a man from Ashburton

Living near a train station so his ears were always hurting

He loved to play sport

And soccer is is what he taught

He watched trains arrive peeking through the curtain

Sarah (5/6CF)

Wishing you all a great week. Thank you to Luca (5/6 CF), for designing this wonderful poster, reminding us all to remain positive in these challenging times.
