From the Wellbeing Team

May 2022

The halfway mark of term has arrived and we are in the full swing with our College Health and Wellbeing Team.

We have been busy showing support for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community for Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day.  This year, the theme of Reconciliation Week was to “Be Brave. Make Change”.  A challenge to all Australians— individuals, families, communities, organisations and government—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.

During the last few weeks we have also celebrated IDAHOBIT day – International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) – which celebrates LGBTQIA+ people globally, and raises awareness for the work still needed to combat discrimination.  At each of our campuses, students and families would have seen a hive of activity, and students engaged in various events to stand in support of our diverse community.

With these major events and days of awareness and celebration, we are reminded that we are all in fact very different – we come from different places, both near and far, and have a wide and diverse range of backgrounds.  This is a great strength of the NBC community, and the diversity among us is what makes us stronger – be are in fact better together.  I would encourage you to consider the cultural or geographical history in your family, and embrace this as it is what makes you you.

Looking ahead, the dark months of Winter are coming.  This can be a particularly challenging time for all of us.  If you are starting to feel a bit down or under the weather, check out these online resources to support your mental health and wellbeing:
