IMPACT

Our Impact students, across Year 7-10 have been involved in many amazing experiences since the start of Term 2.

Our IMPACT tops arrived for all our new students, and they have been looking very smart in their new tops during class. IMPACT (Inspiring Musicians, Performers, Artists to Create Together) is a program for students who have a passion in The Arts, and to explore different pathways which involve these passions.

Year 7/8 - Our Year 7/8's started the term with a trip to Melbourne to participate in several workshops at the Victorian Art Centre. The day started learning the history of Music in the Vault, looking at a wide variety of things that inspired them in the music world. They then finished with a workshop with world renowned Rap Artist Mantra and wrote their own raps, with some very promising rap artists emerging. Students then turned their talents to shoe design, working with local shoe and fashion designer Emily Rastas. Emily took the students through the planning process of design, and the finished results have been amazing!!

Year 9 - Our Year 9's have been learning about life way back when stories and radio plays were an important part of family life. After working with local authors, sound artists and radio personal, the students brought their skills together to write and create their very own radio play. With the prompt "The Knock", the students divided themselves into two groups - the writers / performers and the sound artists. The result, a very chilling piece of writing, enhanced by some equally as chilling sound effects about "That One Night In October". In a few weeks, students will be heading into the recording studio at Don't Poke The Bear, to record their piece, which we look forward to sharing with you.

Year 10 - After working with local book illustrator and an animation company in term 1, the Year 10 students turned their hand to costume and fashion design. Local artists Emily has worked for many years as a costume designer on many big theatre shows in London as well as video clips, and other local productions. She took the students through the process of designing and drawing their different designs and creating a portfolio of work, before the creating could begin. Students then created an outfit for a toy, learning how to sew and decorate, using a wide range of different materials and mediums. They then turned their hand to fashion design, turning a plain denim jacket into a work of art, based around a theme.

PERFORMING ARTS

So much has been taking place around the college in Performing Arts.

The Victorian State School students are halfway through their rehearsals in preparation for their big show day in September. They all should be very proud of the work they are putting into this year's event, after 2 years away.

The students at Wexford and Tallis, in Year 3-6, have been participating in online workshops with Dance Victoria, learning the relationship between Music, movement and dramatization. Through the topic of superheroes, the students have been creating some excellent pieces of work.

Short Black Opera

The last big event has been a special week for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Year 4-6 at Northern Bay. Last week a group of 20 students participated in an intensive workshop with the very talented Opera singer Deborah Cheetham. Deborah is the founder and director of the Dhungal Choir, which many students from Northern Bay have been members of, and the amazing program Short Black Opera for Kids. In 12 hours, these students learnt 9 songs in 4 different languages and presented an amazing performance on the Friday at the Geelong Arts Centre.

This was a very magical and emotional performance where our students were excellent ambassadors of Northern Bay.

From this performance five students were chosen to join the Dhungal Choir and perform at the Geelong Cats home game during the Dreamtime round at GMHBA Stadium.

EXTENDED SCHOOL DAY

The term 2 program has started of strongly and it is wonderful to see so many students enjoying the many programs on offer this term. Programs including Balloon twisting, different sports, wearable art, chess and checkers, are a few of the skills students are embracing and enjoying. Here are a few photos showing the many talents of our students.

A gentle reminder: if your child is unable to attend Extended School Day, please contact your campus office or Amanda Baulch ahead of class to avoid incurring a fine.

SEED

An amazing opportunity for one of our SEED students who entered a competition run by North Shore Sporting Club to design an Indigenous club jumper. This week Kailee Kennedy was invited to their Networking breakfast and awarded the Hansen “Rocky” Couzens Scholarship for Indigenous Art. ('Rocky' was a past player, coach and their first indigenous Life Member.)

Kailee designed the first ever Indigenous jumper for the Club which has been adapted to their Netball skirt and Football Warm up Tops. There will be a competition for our First Nations students to design the 2023 jumper, early in Term 3 as part of our NAIDOC celebrations.

We’d like to thank North Shore sporting club who at the end of 2021 ran a Christmas raffle to raise money for Sun Hats and the Scholarship.
