Years 3 - 6 Community
May 2022
Term 2 has already had some great events, excursions and learning celebrations and we have only hit Week 4! It has been action packed so let’s begin.
The 3 /4 students this term are learning about the community, government roles and responsibilities as well as rules and laws. As part of this Civics and Ciitizenship topic our students have been building Box Cities. These cities have roads, services and community groups. Some campuses have extended this further to even voting using a democratic process to determine the city’s name and the town mayor. At Wexford and Tallis, students had the opportunity to take a walk around the community, write lists and collect data on the services and groups that they saw in their community area. Later in the term we will be using a Makey Makey and programming in Scratch to create an interactive board game that will demonstrate the importance of following rules.
Our 5 /6 students are delving deeper into our government topic learning about the different levels of government. These lucky students have been designing their own islands and using this as a tool to learn how to create a country with a federation, states, capital cities and a government with rules and laws. Students will be creating a Bill for their ERP project to create change!
It has been fantastic to see our students in 3-6 learning the concepts of shape and location in maths. Our students have been making 3D shapes, using symmetry to draw objects and using translations, reflections and rotations with two-dimensional shapes.
The 3 /4 have also used google maps to locate different areas in our own community where the 5/ 6 students have been learning about angles.
In writing the 3-6 students are learning how to persuade others. Students have been learning key vocabulary, sentence starters to engage the reader and to support their opinions with facts and data. Watch out, they may be looking to try these techniques on you at home!
This term we were finally able to get on buses and enjoy excursions again. During this term 3-6s students visit ArtVo where they step into a world of optical illusions with larger than life murals, experiencing an art museum in a whole new way. ArtVo photos will provide students with additional ideas for their Writers Notebook seeds.
This term the year 3 and year 5 students have been involved in NAPLAN. Each day in Week 3 the students put in their best efforts in different areas of the curriculum. We would like to congratulate our students on completing these tests to the best of their ability.
