YOUNG VINNIES GRANDPARENTS REARING GRANDCHILDREN AFTERNOON

Yesterday afternoon, a group of Young Vinnies students from Years 7-11 came together for the Grandparents Rearing Grandchildren event that was held on the Boarder's Lawn. This was an opportunity for the 16 grandparents to sit back and relax while we entertained the 20 children with a variety of games and face painting.

The afternoon started with the lovely Junior Concert Band and Choir playing some pieces they have been practising all year, as well as some Christmas carols to get everyone into the festive spirit. We encouraged the grandparents and grandchildren to get involved with the band and enjoyed watching the little ones play some instruments.

Mr Hunt had organised a great variety of games for us to play with the children who had bright smiles across their faces as we all played these games together. Many thanks to Dr Resta for cooking a barbeque for all the grandparents, grandchildren and students. The food was delicious and we also all enjoyed an ice cream. This was an amazing chance for us to connect with the children.

Jenna Gorton (Year 9 Carden) and Meg Connolly (Year 7 Hannan) helped bake individual Christmas cakes for each family and gave the following speech:

“The students at Sacred Heart College have enjoyed making Christmas cakes for you this year. All the Years 7-12 students who attend the Mary MacKillop Centre helped make the cakes which we then wrapped with love and care. We enjoyed measuring and mixing ingredients and even managed not to eat any!  The smell of Christmas was definitely in the room, and we would like to present you with these cakes to show our appreciation for all you do. We really hope you enjoy eating the cakes as much as we enjoyed making them for you”.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience and opportunity to be able to connect with those from many different generations with many various experiences and stories.

The following comment was received from Jan Standen from Grandparent’s Rearing Grandchildren:

“Thank you for a wonderful afternoon of music, a meal and friendship. Over the years we could not have supported the grandparent carers any better if it was not for the love and support of Sacred Heart College, so on behalf of GRGWA I say thank you all with all my heart, for the support you have given us”.

Many thanks to the many staff who attended, the Junior Concert Band and Choir and the MMC students for your contribution to the event.
