Senior School News

What a busy few weeks it has been for our students in the Senior School! All classes have now settled in to a regular routine and our students are working diligently so far this semester.

Prefect Investiture

We have a wonderful group of school leaders in both Year 11 and 12 this year and on Tuesday 11th February, we were able to officially induct our 12 leaders at the Prefect Investiture. Parents, staff and students were invited to an official ceremony and afternoon tea with guest speaker and former prefect of 2011, Tiahn Wright. Congratulations, once again to our 2020 prefects.

Senior School Policies Consent

I have been in communication with parents regarding our Senior School Policies this year and have created an event on Compass that outlines all of the policies for S/N results, SACs, SATs and attendance. If you have not yet had a look and consented, may I remind you to do so by March 20th. Should there be any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Surviving VCE: Michael Carr-Gregg

Ringwood students and parents were lucky to have had a presentation by psychologist and author Dr Michael Carr-Gregg on Wednesday 26th Feb at Norwood Secondary College. Dr Carr-Gregg provides scientific, pragmatic, research proven methods on best practice for students to achieve their best potential.

Here are some fun facts:

  • Your brain can process information on its super highway at a speed of 431kph. If you think you are a multi tasker, think again! This speed drops down to 100kph if you think you can ‘multi task’.

Your brain will not function if it is:

  • not well fed
  • not well rested
  • not adequately hydrated
  • not exercised
  • distracted
  • full of alcohol

Studying – study in 20 min blocks. Optimum short-term memory moves into long term memory if students work this way. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU STUDY FOR ONLY 20 MINUTES A DAY!

  • Study in groups and teach each other
  • Take notes BY HAND – don’t just do ‘transference’ work where you just copy it onto your laptop.
  • Eat an EGG – no one cares how you prepare the egg, just eat the blessed thing. Wash it down with yoghurt, blackberries and walnuts…best brain food ever!
  • Part time work - DO NOT WORK OVER 12 HOURS PER WEEK…research is there to show that any more hours will have an adverse effect on your ability to achieve your personal best.
  • Try and get 8-10 hours per sleep every night. Five stages of the sleep process must be in REMS (deep sleep).
