Welcome to another exciting term of STEM! This term, our whole-school big idea is ‘force and motion’. Our big ideas encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and hands-on experimentation.

Foundation

Through exploring the senses, musical instruments, and toys, students have developed a deeper understanding of the world around them and enhanced their creative thinking and problem-solving skills. This unit not only fosters curiosity and engagement but also lays a strong foundation for future STEM learning.

Levels 1 and 2

Over the term, students have developed their understanding of forces, explored the concept of motion, and designed and constructed their own moveable toys. The students have explored how objects, robots and their own toys move and concluded their investigations and plans and are now mid building!

Levels 3 and 4

Through the software ‘Tinkercad SimLab’ and playgrounds themselves, students developed their understanding of forces and explored the principles of motion. They are now applying their knowledge to design and create their own sustainable playground plan using the website ‘Playground Ideas’.

Levels 5 and 6

After meeting with an engineer in Queensland and experimenting with energy sources, the students started their own investigations into the principles of force and motion in space travel as well as space phenomena and space related problems.

Stemorable Moment!

A highlight this term was building hovercrafts with the Grade 5/6s and their visitors on Special Friends Day. Some groups even had time to squeeze in a hovercraft race!

Coming Up…

Next term we have our first ever National Science Week celebration! The school theme for National Science Week is Innovation: Powering Future Industries. The theme incorporates the advancement in technology in all industries, especially using artificial intelligence (AI).

Science week is from the 12th to the 20th of August.

In term 3, the MPS Fathering Project and STEM will be joining forces for our termly event.
