Year 4 Sacrament of First Eucharist

The Year 4 students ( and two Year 5 students) are busily preparing for their Sacrament of First Eucharist. On Tuesday we had a Faith Night at school for the candiates where families completed activities to prepare them for the Sacrament next week. It was a wonderful turnout and thank you to everyone who could make it.

The Sacrament of First Eucharist will be held in the Church next Tuesday at 7pm. All members of our St Finbar's community are welcome to attend.

St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal

We will once again be supporting St Vincent de Paul with their annual winter appeal. The Winter Appeal will begin next week and our Year 6 Social Justice Leaders, with the support of the class Social Justice Leaders, will be coordinating the process.

The purpose of the winter appeal is to provide emergency assistance to people in need our main requirement is for non-perishable food and household items. Major requirements are as follows:

  • Soups (tinned and packet)
  • Noodles & flavourings, etc.
  • Baked beans, tinned spaghetti, etc.
  • Healthy breakfast cereals (Weet-Bix, muesli, etc. … some gluten free?)
  • Tinned and dry food
    • e.g. tuna, salmon, … << tinned fish are a good healthy food
    • vegetables, tomatoes, etc.
    • fruits, … << tinned fruit also a good thing – a treat!
  • Rice. Long life simmer sauces, etc.
  • Pasta and pasta sauces
  • Spreads (e.g. jams, honey, Vegemite, peanut butter, etc.)
  • Biscuits, rice crackers, etc.
  • Tea, coffee, Milo (in general coffee is used more than tea)
  • Soap, body wash, shampoo, deodorant, etc.
  • Toothpaste and tooth brushes
  • Toilet paper
  • Laundry powder

Additional notes: Things like packs of multiple items (toothbrushes, for example) are better value buys – and we can split those to assist individuals. But for food stuffs we prefer smaller ‘standard’ jars and packs (say, 1kg rice, for example) rather than having to re-package large bulk packages.

A message from Cathy and Philip - Thank you in advance to all the students, staff and parents of St Finbar’s Primary School for your wonderful, on-going support of our annual Winter Appeal – from all of us at St Vincent de Paul Society, Brighton East Conference.

Gospel Reflection - Sunday 21st May

Gospel Reading

Matthew 28:16-20

Jesus charges his disciples to make disciples of all nations and promises to be with them forever.

Family Connection

Just as Jesus sent his disciples to make disciples, our family, the domestic Church, is called to bear witness to the life of discipleship. That act of witnessing can take many forms. First and foremost our family should call people to discipleship by the example of our love for one another. That example is only the beginning; our love must extend beyond the family, reaching out to others and to the world.

Together with your family, identify one or more ways in which your family lives the life of Christian discipleship. Thank God for the blessing of the opportunity to be able to show God’s love. Then read together today’s Gospel, Matthew 28:16-20. Discuss what Jesus sends his disciples to do. Work together to identify one or more ways in which your family would like to do a better job bearing witness to the life of discipleship. Choose one of those ways and work together to make it happen. Pray as a family for the grace to be witnesses to the world of the life of discipleship. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.
