Principal's Report

Welcome to Term 4

Dear students, parents/carers and staff,

I hope this message finds you well as we enter the final term of the year.

Our college has many outstanding staff members. It is with great pride that I announce that Ms Ellen Newton has been shortlisted as a finalist (Outstanding Physical Education and Activity Teacher) for the Victorian Education Excellence Awards for 2023. The winners will be announced on Friday 27th October.

Last week, it was announced that Ms Erin Louden was the winner of Most Outstanding Rugby Academy School Ambassador. This was awarded by Rugby Victoria at their recent annual awards presentations. Congratulations to both Ms Newton and Ms Louden for their fantastic work in supporting program development and student learning.

Term 4 is a crucial time for our Year 12 students as they prepare for their upcoming final examinations, and I want to take a moment to share some important thoughts with all of you.

First and foremost, I want to remind our Year 12 students that your ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) does not define you as an individual. While it is an important measure for university admissions, it does not encompass your entire worth or potential. Your unique talents, character, and passion for learning are qualities that extend far beyond a number on a piece of paper.

As you approach these final examinations, I want to emphasize that preparation is indeed and will be the key to success. The effort you put into studying and revising now will pay off in the long run. One effective strategy for preparing is to attempt as many practice exams as possible. These practice exams not only help you become familiar with the format and style of questions but also allow you to identify areas where you may need further improvement.

Equally important is seeking feedback on your performance. Feedback from teachers, peers, or tutors can provide valuable insights into your strengths and areas that require more attention. Don't hesitate to reach out for help or clarification when needed. We are here to support you on this journey.

Remember, success is not solely measured by the outcome of these exams. It's about the growth, perseverance, and resilience you demonstrate throughout the process. So, stay focused, stay positive, and do your best. We believe in your potential, and we are proud of the hard work you have put in so far.

I would also like to extend my appreciation to the parents and guardians who have supported our Year 12 students throughout their educational journey. Your guidance and encouragement have played a crucial role in their development.

As we move forward into Term 4, let's continue to work together as a community to ensure that our Year 12 students have the best possible environment for their preparations. Together, we can help them achieve their goals and aspirations.

Wishing all our Year 12 students the very best in their final examinations and to those students not undertaking exams, remain focussed and work hard for complete your learning tasks in order to meet outcomes.

On Tuesday 17th October, our Year 12 have their final Assembly. Each year, this is special event in which we acknowledge and celebrate the completion of 13 years of schooling for our Year 12 students. It signifies almost the end of era and the beginning of a new chapter as our most senior students step into tertiary education or the world of work. Year 12 parents/carers are welcome to join us. Please contact the school to register interest.

During the holidays, the recruitment of staff for next year continued. Thank you to our committed staff who gave several hours of the break to participate on selection panels. The recruitment of high-quality staff is vital to supporting our students. Once again, I am very pleased with the appointments made.

I am pleased to announce that the following staff will be joining us in 2024.

  • Teacher – Science, Rhyce Mahon – Former teacher of HPSC, currently teaching Science at Parkdale Secondary College.
  • Teacher – Science/STEM, Russell Smits – Currently Head of Programs, Casey Tec School.
  • Teacher- - Accounting/ Humanities – Elissa Noble, Elissa is currently the Director of Humanities at Officer Secondary College.
  • Teacher – Mathematics, Kathy Nguyen - Kathy is a graduate teacher.

Over the past months, construction has been progressing steadily, and I am pleased to announce that Part A of our Stage 3 building program, which includes the Wellbeing and Science facilities along with other civil works, is on track to be completed in time for the commencement of the 2024 school year.

As we look forward to the 2024 school year, we are excited about the opportunities these new facilities will bring for our students and educators. They will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and improved well-being resources that will help them excel academically and personally.

I would like to thank our maintenance team for their work, and to staff and students for their patience during the construction work.

HP's got talent took place at lunchtime, last Friday. The audience was provided with an array of acts. We have some very talented individuals at the college. A highlight for me was the wonderful supportive encouragement which enabled all performers to showcase their talents in a safe and supportive environment. Thank you to Mr Callum Jarrott and Mr Ryan Evangelista for encouraging students and facilitating this event. House points will be distributed accordingly.

Once again, congratulations to all the performers and thank you to the entire college community for creating an atmosphere where these talents can flourish. It is events like "HP's Got Talent" that make our college a special place.

On 11th October the college held another successful Parent Connect session, which helped many of the families in our learning community to develop their understanding of local organisations. We were fortunate to have a guest speaker from KOMAC, who presented ways that families could engage in our community and access supports if required. Families had the opportunity to mingle while asking questions over afternoon tea, and left with a goodie bag of resources and pamper items.

Parent Connect is open to all parents/carers, and the next session will be held on the 8th November, the guest speaker will be from the Afghan Women’s Association. Keep an eye out for more details to come! A big thank you to this week’s guest speakers from KOMAC, our much appreciated community partners.

Thank you for supporting our college and the continued improvements that we are making.

Regards

Wayne Haworth,

Principal
