VCAA Plain English Speaking Award
On Friday 31 May, India L and Helena R both of Year 11 headed to St Monica’s in Epping to participate in the VCAA Plain English Speaking Award. This is a public speaking competition that requires competitors to present a prepared speech of six minutes duration, followed by an impromptu speech of three minutes. Helena and India competed against other students from schools including St Monica’s, Northside Christian College, Hume Anglican Grammar and Ivanhoe Grammar School.
India passionately spoke about climate change and Helena addressed the issue of trust in the era of social media. The impromptu topic invited competitors to explore ‘they must be crazy’; this resulted in discussions on feminism, sport, politics and Pokemon!
Unfortunately, the girls did not go through to the next round this year, but as always, they represented Aitken College with aplomb. I would like to thank Helena and India for all their efforts especially while trying to prepare speeches at the same time as meeting the grueling demands of VCE.
