SPORTS STATISTICIANS IN THE MAKING!

Year 8 Maths classes are finishing off Semester 1 undertaking a Sports Statistics project. Students are investigating the grand old sport of Victorian Football League, going back to its roots in 1897. In 1897 there were only 8 teams, 14 rounds and the scores were much smaller. The Year 8s are putting their Maths skills to use calculating mean, median and inter-quartile range, drawing line graphs and histograms to decide which teams performed the best in 1897. A project like this takes organisation, time management as well as calculation skills.

I have really enjoyed this unit, being able to work at my own pace and doing something different from the usual exercises. I have enjoyed the fact that it is real statistics from a sport that I enjoy. I have learnt how to calculate the interquartile range and the median in different, faster ways.” Amy “Amos” Wilkins, Year 8

In this project, I’m learning about the VFL which is very interesting because my motherland is China and I have never heard of it before. So I am not only learning Maths, I am also learning about Australian sport.” – Billy Wu, Year 8

I’ve enjoyed using real footy teams because it feels like you are actually compiling real data that matters and not just some random numbers.”Phillip Park, Year 8
