SPORTS STATISTICIANS IN THE MAKING!
Year 8 Maths classes are finishing off Semester 1 undertaking a Sports Statistics project. Students are investigating the grand old sport of Victorian Football League, going back to its roots in 1897. In 1897 there were only 8 teams, 14 rounds and the scores were much smaller. The Year 8s are putting their Maths skills to use calculating mean, median and inter-quartile range, drawing line graphs and histograms to decide which teams performed the best in 1897. A project like this takes organisation, time management as well as calculation skills.
“I have really enjoyed this unit, being able to work at my own pace and doing something different from the usual exercises. I have enjoyed the fact that it is real statistics from a sport that I enjoy. I have learnt how to calculate the interquartile range and the median in different, faster ways.” – Amy “Amos” Wilkins, Year 8
“In this project, I’m learning about the VFL which is very interesting because my motherland is China and I have never heard of it before. So I am not only learning Maths, I am also learning about Australian sport.” – Billy Wu, Year 8
“I’ve enjoyed using real footy teams because it feels like you are actually compiling real data that matters and not just some random numbers.” – Phillip Park, Year 8
