Koonung students shine at Chess tournament

While most inter-school sport is on hold at the moment, chess tournaments have all moved online.  On Friday 22 May, four students from Koonung competed in an online inter-school chess tournament against Oberon High School, Geelong Grammar, Trinity College, Geelong Grammar, and Bannockburn College.

We all played seven games of chess, regardless of whether we won or lost.  Our combined scores were then added up to get our total team score. This was the same for every school, the top four player’s scores were added up for the team total. We scored one point for a win, half a point for a draw, and nothing for a loss.

Our four players were Year 8 student Henry Jackson, and Year 9 students, Dhruv Mehta, James Lonnen, and I. We scored 4 ½, 5, 3, and 6 respectively. This brought our team score to 18 ½ at the end of the tournament, equal 1st with Oberon College. In the event of a tie, we move to score of the 5th player, and because we didn’t have one, we lost on the tiebreaker.

We were still happy with an overall place of 2nd, and all had a great day.

Chess club is still on every Friday at 1pm  and we would love to see more people there. Email Mr Sanderson for details.
