Reflections on Mediation Session with Tami Roos

Today we did a meditation with Tami Roos. She told us a lot about meditation like what it is, when to do it, and what it does to help you. First she led us in a mini meditation of just focusing on your breath.Then afterwards she helped me realise that when you focus on something important you don’t have any other thoughts or at least you don’t realise them. That really helped me during the next one we did which was still only 5 mins but every little bit counts. This whole session really impacted on me and how I should really take care of my mental health but it also helped because she was saying how meditation can really help you sleep and I normally have trouble doing that. One thing I learnt is that lots of AFL players also do meditation and it helps them play because it improves their awareness of the field and the game. To become a better mediator I will really try to meditate everyday, normally in the morning if I wake up early.

When I did the meditation I was thinking about how lucky I was to have a meditation expert come to our class meet and talk to us. Tami sounded like she did in the meditation recordings she makes, and I felt so relaxed and calm.

At the start of the meditation I had a blocked nose and hay fever but at the end, (After I had relaxed,) It was gone. Also, I felt very calm and I forgot about all my worries.

I learned that, before I do dance and gymnastics competitions I need to do meditation. I am in a high-level for gymnastics and sometimes it can get stressful. A way to calm myself down even if I am in public and there is no room for me to meditate. I can still take deep breaths and relax. I usually get nervous when we wait for the results for my gymnastics and calisthenics / Dance competition. When I'm waiting I can still sit down and take deep breaths and calm myself down.

A few years ago when we did meditation in class I would not participate and chat to my friends. Now that I know the importance of it, I participate and enjoy it. It really calms me down and when we do it in the morning it sets me up for a good day. Now that I am a well-being leader, I have done a lot of things to relax myself. Such as meditating, taking deep breaths and thinking about all the good things that could happen

Today I thought I would join Archie and the 5/6 Students on their Meditation Incursion. Meditation is something I have personally been practising daily for around 2 years now.

Tami Roos who took the incursion was incredibly informative and a wonderful host.

Something that resonated with me that Tami said is that meditation is not religious and has no direct correlation to religion, perhaps a stigma that

those of the catholic faith might have felt uncomfortable with. Ironically all religions practice meditation, one might call it prayer a practise that perhaps we don’t do often enough these days.

Personally I have benefited immensely from meditation, a practice like Tami I do every morning as soon as I wake up. Meditation has helped me slow the mind, reduce stress, anxiety and increase focus. What’s not to like about that.

I was thinking how blessed our children were that meditation was part of their curriculum. Something I wish I had grown up with and not discovered at around 40 years of age.

Although most of our children may struggle to process the benefits of meditation now, perhaps one day the light bulb will go off and they will realise how wonderful this practise is.

Today the 5/6 did a google meet with Tami Roos and we learnt about meditation and she answered our questions. It helped me to learn and know more about how good meditation is for my mindset. I learned that in the morning you should meditate each day and that you shouldn't eat sugar or drink caffeine before you meditate. My goal is to focus more on my breathing and take it more seriously. I really enjoyed and appreciated the simple and relevant explanation that Tami Roos gave on meditation and its physical and emotional benefits for all age groups. The short short breathing meditation she facilitated demonstrated the ease of cultivating mindfulness and calm.

Personally, I have embraced the use of meditation during childbirth and feel fortunate that my children have the opportunity at such a young age to incorporate meditation into their lives to have a positive influence.
