Outdoor Education – How important is it for us to adapt to ‘Change from the Norm’

(Adventure Alternatives Outdoor Education - Mount Alvernia Year 7 Survey 2020)

At completion of camp, all Year 7s were asked to complete a survey.  The data above is a snapshot of student responses, and it looks like they had a really good time!  The students felt the program was pitched at an appropriate level.  Furthermore, the majority of the students found the activities "hard but rewarding", which is exactly the purpose of the experience, so that comfort zones are extended and students grow.  Finally, further success is seen with the majority of students feeling safe.

These findings are invaluable to the Outdoor Education program as they are a beneficial resource in designing the best programs for our students to support wellbeing and to facilitate coping with change.

Acceptance of change will serve your daughters well.  Participation in the Outdoor Education program means there are, or will be, changes that require adaptations from our comfort zone.  Feelings of discomfort in a safe environment correlate to growth of self.  Acceptance of change means individual growth, learning from past experiences, gathering more tools, sharpening your minds, developing your talents, adding more skills, and becoming more influential in our world.  This will hold your daughters in good stead on their journey through high school and will support them in their future endeavours.

Whatever the area in your life, you will experience change.  Learn to embrace it.

Acceptance of change will provide opportunities.  Change is all about embracing new challenges and being prepared to think differently.

You can’t change the direction of the wind, but you can adjust your sails to always reach your destination.

In addition, this article below is simple, articulate, and straight to the point.

Parenting in this rapid world of 'must have now, must do now' is having a devastating impact upon attachment and emotional regulation.  Change may be difficult, but it takes courage in order to bring about the desired effect.
